ISO 11418-1:2016 specifies the design, dimensions, material and requirements of drop-dispensing glass bottles. Drop-dispensing glass bottles are applicable to primary packs used in direct contact with a drug. It is applicable to drop-dispensing glass bottles used in pharmacy. Together with the corresponding closure systems, they serve for packaging of pharmaceutical preparations which are not intended for parenteral use.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11418-1:2016 is an international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), focusing on containers and accessories for pharmaceutical preparations, specifically drop-dispensing glass bottles. This standard defines the design, dimensions, materials, and performance requirements for drop-dispensing glass bottles primarily used in pharmacy for packaging pharmaceutical products. These bottles serve as primary packaging components in direct contact with drugs but are not intended for parenteral use.
The standard ensures consistent quality, safety, and functionality of drop-dispensing glass bottles, contributing significantly to drug stability, purity, potency, and safety during manufacturing and storage. Compliance with ISO 11418-1:2016 helps pharmaceutical manufacturers and packaging suppliers meet regulatory and quality requirements.
Key Topics
-
Design and Dimensions: Specifies exact dimensions, design features, and tolerances to ensure compatibility and standardization across pharmaceutical packaging applications. Includes nominal volume size ranges from 5 ml to 100 ml with precise dimensional parameters.
-
Material Requirements: Bottles must be made of colorless or amber borosilicate or soda-lime-silica glass, complying with defined hydrolytic resistance classes (ISO 4802-HC 3, ISO 719-HGB 3, ISO 720-HGA 2). These materials protect the drug product from contamination or degradation.
-
Performance Criteria:
- Vertical Load Resistance: Bottles are tested according to ISO 8113 to ensure structural integrity when subjected to vertical loads during handling and transport.
- Hydrolytic Resistance: Internal surfaces must meet hydrolytic resistance requirements to prevent chemical interaction with pharmaceutical products (tested per ISO 4802-1 and ISO 4802-2).
- Thermal Shock Resistance: Bottles must withstand temperature shock differences of up to 42 °C, tested in accordance with ISO 7459 to prevent breakage during temperature fluctuations.
-
Marking: Clearly defined marking requirements include manufacturer trademarks, nominal volume, mold codes, and other identification features to ensure traceability and compliance.
Applications
ISO 11418-1:2016 drop-dispensing glass bottles are widely used in the pharmaceutical industry for:
- Packaging ophthalmic solutions, ear drops, and other liquid medications requiring precise drop-dispensing.
- Primary packaging in pharmacies for liquid drug formulations not administered parenterally.
- Ensuring drug stability and safety by providing a reliable container that protects from contamination and chemical changes.
- Facilitating standardized packaging compatible with corresponding closure systems and accessories.
This standard is critical for pharmaceutical manufacturers, packaging designers, quality assurance teams, and regulatory bodies to ensure safe and effective drug packaging.
Related Standards
- ISO 4802-1 & ISO 4802-2: Hydrolytic resistance testing of glass container surfaces, essential for verifying the chemical inertness of containers.
- ISO 719 & ISO 720: Methods for assessing hydrolytic resistance of glass grains at different temperatures.
- ISO 7459: Test methods for thermal shock resistance of glass containers.
- ISO 8113: Defines test methods for vertical load resistance in glass pharmaceutical containers.
- ISO 1101: Geometrical tolerancing used to establish form, orientation, and location tolerances of container dimensions.
Following ISO 11418-1:2016 harmonizes pharmaceutical glass drop dispenser manufacturing, ensuring product safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance internationally.
