ISO/IEC 11553-3:2013 describes the requirements to deal with noise hazards and specifies all the information necessary to carry out efficiently and under standardized conditions the determination, declaration and verification of airborne noise emission from laser processing machines and hand-held laser processing devices within the scope of ISO/IEC 11553-1 and ISO/IEC 11553-2. It specifies the safety requirements relating to noise hazards. It specifies noise measurement methods, installation and operating conditions to be used for the test, together with the information to be supplied by manufacturers of such equipment. ISO/IEC 11553-3:2013 applies to those laser processing machines and hand-held laser processing devices included in the scope of ISO/IEC 11553-1 and ISO/IEC 11553-2. Noise emission characteristics include emission sound pressure levels at work stations and the sound power level. Declared noise emission values permit comparison of laser processing machines and hand-held laser processing devices on the market. The use of this noise test code (see Annex A) ensures the reproducibility of the determination of the characteristic noise emission values within specific limits. These limits are determined by the accuracy grade of the noise emission measuring method used. Noise emission measurements specified by ISO/IEC 11553-3:2013 meet the requirements of an engineering method (accuracy grade 2).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11553-3:2013, titled Safety of machinery - Laser processing machines - Part 3: Noise reduction and noise measurement methods for laser processing machines and hand-held processing devices and associated auxiliary equipment (accuracy grade 2), provides essential requirements and methodologies to address noise hazards generated by laser processing machinery. Developed by ISO in collaboration with IEC, this international standard focuses on determining, declaring, and verifying airborne noise emissions within laser processing equipment and devices as outlined in ISO/IEC 11553-1 and 11553-2.
The standard aims to reduce health risks such as hearing loss and stress caused by noise exposure, specifying safety requirements, measurement methods, and noise reduction techniques with an engineering accuracy grade 2. It ensures comparability and reproducibility in noise emission declarations, contributing to safer workplaces and optimized machinery design.
Key Topics
-
Noise Hazards from Laser Machines: Explains risks including permanent hearing loss, tinnitus, fatigue, headaches, impaired balance, disrupted communication, and failure to detect warning signals.
-
Noise Reduction Requirements: Emphasizes noise mitigation as an integral part of the machinery design process by targeting noise sources using low-noise components, vibration damping, acoustic enclosures, and strategic placement of noisy parts.
-
Measurement Methods: Details step-by-step procedures for noise emission measurement including sound pressure levels at workstations and sound power levels using ISO 3744, ISO 11201, and related acoustic standards under accuracy grade 2 conditions.
-
Verification Procedures: Describes threshold criteria for noise testing, such as conducting initial screening with class 2 sound level meters and applying comprehensive testing if emission sound pressure exceeds defined values (e.g., 65 dB(A) at workstations).
-
User Information: Specifies the required noise emission information manufacturers must provide, including emission sound pressure levels, peak instantaneous sound values, sound power levels, and recommendations for noise control measures and hearing protection.
Applications
ISO 11553-3:2013 applies broadly to:
-
Industrial Laser Processing Machines: Those used for cutting, welding, marking, and engraving in manufacturing environments.
-
Hand-Held Laser Processing Devices: Portable laser tools for tasks requiring mobility, where noise emission varies due to component separation.
-
Auxiliary Equipment: Associated devices such as pumps, fans, and cooling systems that contribute to the overall noise signature.
This standard helps manufacturers design quieter laser processing equipment, supports safety officers in risk assessment, and aids regulatory compliance with occupational health directives. By following ISO 11553-3, companies can minimize noise exposure, enhance worker safety, and improve operational efficiency.
Related Standards
ISO 11553-3 is part of a broader set of safety standards for laser machinery, including:
