Specifies the dimensions and characteristics of the interface zone of the sole and parts of the shaft of snowboard-boots, to provide defined attachment conditions for the snowboard-binding.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11634:1996 defines the interface between snowboard boots and snowboard bindings. The standard specifies the dimensions and characteristics of the sole interface zone and parts of the boot shaft to ensure defined attachment conditions for bindings. ISO 11634 applies to snowboard boots from Mondopoint size 15.0 upward and establishes common criteria to improve compatibility, safety and interchangeability between boots and bindings.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Interface zone definition: Specifies the contact surface of the boot sole that engages the binding (the "zone de jonction").
- Minimum contact area: A minimum contact surface of 45 mm is required for the forward interface.
- Sole geometry and widths: Allows continuous-front soles or alternatives with parallel sides 60–75 mm wide up to 45 mm from the toe end.
- Heel clearance: The boot upper must not encroach on the heel zone defined by an angle of 0° to 30°, maintaining clearance for binding function.
- Mounting point marking: A permanent, clearly visible mark identifying the boot’s mid-length mounting point must be present on both sides of the sole.
- Dimensional tolerances: General tolerances are referenced to ISO 2768‑1; specific shaded-zone tolerances include dimensions noted as 25 +3 and 34 +3 (mm) in the standard figures. One dimension in the standard becomes mandatory after a transition period noted by the text.
- Test conditions: Measurements and tests are to be performed in normal atmosphere (approximately 23 °C and 50% relative humidity).
- Marking and conformity: Boots complying with ISO 11634 must carry the manufacturer’s or importer’s name; manufacturers may declare conformity to ISO 11634.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 11634 is used by:
- Snowboard boot manufacturers - to design soles and uppers that are compatible with commercial bindings and meet interoperability requirements.
- Binding manufacturers - to develop binding geometries and mounting systems that match standard boot interfaces.
- Test laboratories and QA teams - to verify dimensions, clearances and marking under specified conditions.
- Retailers, importers and regulatory bodies - to check compliance and labelling for market access.
- Product designers and standards writers - for product specification, integration and international trade.
Using ISO 11634 helps ensure boot-binding compatibility, reduces incorrect attachment risks, and supports consistent performance and safety across products.
