ISO 11660-3:2008

Overview

ISO 11660-3:2008 - "Cranes - Access, guards and restraints - Part 3: Tower cranes" sets particular safety requirements for access, guards and restraints on tower cranes (as defined in ISO 4306-3). It complements the general requirements of ISO 11660-1 by addressing tower-crane specific design and operational features to protect personnel during normal use, inspection, maintenance, assembly and disassembly.

• Hatches (manholes) - Minimum hatch sizes are specified where crane dimensions are constrained (examples: 0.55 × 0.55 m for some jib cranes; 0.50 × 0.50 m for automated-assembly cranes; type-2 access 0.50 × 0.40 m).
• Walkways and jib access - Walkway width and edge plinth requirements (plinth height 0.03 m) are set for safe movement along horizontal jibs. Where inspection from ground is impossible, a trolley-mounted basket and continuous fall-protection or side guards must be provided; minimum basket size 0.5 × 0.35 m and marked load/person limits are required.
• Protection against falling components - Gears, pulleys, covers and trolleys must be secured and designed to prevent parts falling during normal operation; covers should be hinged or otherwise retained.
