ISO 11783 as a whole specifies a serial data network for control and communications on forestry or agricultural tractors and mounted, semi-mounted, towed or self-propelled implements. Its purpose is to standardize the method and format of transfer of data between sensor, actuators, control elements and information-storage and display units, whether mounted on, or part of, the tractor or implement. ISO 11783-9:2012 describes the Tractor ECU, the control function that provides the gateway between the network's tractor and implement buses, as well as performing other functions.

Overview
ISO 11783-9:2012 - part of the ISO 11783 (ISOBUS) series - defines the Tractor ECU (TECU) function for serial control and communications networks used on agricultural and forestry tractors and implements. The standard specifies how a Tractor ECU acts as the gateway between the tractor and implement buses, how it represents the tractor on the implement bus (including Virtual Terminal access), and the minimum message and service behavior required to support interoperable tractor–implement communication.
