This International Standard gives specifications for the photo exit port of microscopes for connecting 35 mm single lens reflecting (SLR) photo cameras (T-thread adaptation), without the associated 35 mm camera lens, with reference to the projected microscope image plane. The adaptation of the 35 mm SLR photo cameras is obtained using camera-specific adapters which are not included in the scope of this International Standard.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11882:1997 specifies the mechanical interface for connecting 35 mm single-lens reflex (SLR) photo cameras to microscopes using the T‑thread adaptation. The standard defines the photo exit port dimensions and the reference to the projected microscope image (film) plane. Camera-specific intermediate adapters (to mount an SLR body without its lens) are explicitly outside the scope of the standard. ISO 11882 provides a consistent, repeatable mechanical interface for microscope camera connections to ensure proper alignment of the image plane.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope: Dimensions and fitting arrangement for the microscope photo exit port for 35 mm SLR cameras (T‑thread adaptation).
- Connecting dimensions: The standard specifies the required mechanical dimensions (see figures in the document). Example values given in the published extract include:
- Combined flange distance a + b = (54.9 + 0.2) mm (reference from the film/microscope image plane).
- Minimum clearance c ≥ 4.5 mm.
- Fitting arrangement: A recommended arrangement for an intermediate mechanical adapter between the microscope photo port and the 35 mm SLR camera is shown in the standard (figure 2).
- Exclusions: Camera-specific adapters and the camera lenses themselves are not standardized by ISO 11882; only the microscope exit port geometry and interface are specified.
Applications
ISO 11882 is practical for anyone involved in integrating photographic imaging with optical microscopes:
- Microscope manufacturers - to design standardized photo exit ports compatible with 35 mm SLR camera bodies via T‑thread adapters.
- Adapter and accessory makers - to produce intermediate adapters that match the specified exit-port geometry and flange distance.
- Laboratories and imaging facilities - to select compatible microscope-camera combinations for documentation, photomicrography, and research imaging.
- Optical engineers and product designers - to ensure mechanical interoperability and correct positioning of the projected microscope image plane relative to the camera film or sensor.
Using the standard helps ensure mechanical compatibility, repeatable registration of the projected image plane, and predictable optical alignment when coupling SLR cameras to microscopes.
