ISO 11884-1:2006 specifies minimum requirements for stereomicroscopes used mainly for visual observation for general use.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11884-1:2006 specifies minimum requirements for stereomicroscopes for general use, intended mainly for visual observation. Published by ISO (Technical Committee ISO/TC 172, Subcommittee SC 5), this second edition defines baseline optical, mechanical, environmental and safety criteria that manufacturers, test laboratories and purchasers can use to ensure consistent performance of stereomicroscopes used in industry, education and routine laboratory work.
Key topics and requirements
-
Optical and mechanical specifications
- Defines tolerances for total magnification (e.g., ±10 %) and alignment between left and right optical channels.
- Specifies interpupillary distance range (55 mm to 75 mm) and requirements for focus, image centering and imaging rotation.
- Resolution and depth-of-field test conditions are defined (e.g., measured in the centre of the field with a 10× eyepiece at 0 D).
- Testing methods for optical/mechanical parameters reference ISO 15227.
-
Environmental conditions
- Sets operating (use), storage and transport condition limits (temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, shock and vibration).
- Examples: operating temperature typically 10 °C to 40 °C; storage and transport extremes are defined with specific shock and vibration profiles.
- Environmental tests and conditioning procedures reference parts of ISO 9022.
-
Safety and compliance
- Electrical and laboratory-safety requirements are covered by IEC 61010-1.
- Marking and labeling requirements reference ISO 11883.
-
Testing and documentation
- All specified tests are type tests; statistical evaluation rules apply.
- Stereomicroscopes must be supplied with instructions for use, cleaning and maintenance.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Manufacturers - to design and validate stereomicroscopes that meet recognized minimum performance and environmental robustness.
- Test and calibration laboratories - to run type tests and certify compliance using ISO 15227 and ISO 9022 methods.
- Procurement and quality managers - to specify minimumacceptance criteria for purchasing and incoming inspection.
- Educational and industrial labs - to select reliable instruments for routine visual inspection, quality control, teaching, and assembly tasks.
