ISO 11894-1:2013 describes a test method for the determination of ionic conductivity of oxide-ion-conducting solid electrolytes by the 4-terminal method with alternating current (AC 4-terminal method). ISO 11894-1:2013 applies to solid electrolytes which have oxide ionic transference numbers higher than 0,99. The applicable conductivity range shall be 1 to 1,000 S m−1. Values expressed in this International Standard are in accordance with the International System of Units (SI).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11894-1:2013 specifies a standardized test method for measuring ionic conductivity of oxide-ion-conducting solid electrolytes in fine ceramics (advanced ceramics) using the AC 4‑terminal method. The Standard applies to materials with oxide‑ion transference numbers > 0.99 and a measurable conductivity range of 1 to 1 000 S·m⁻¹. All values are expressed in SI units. ISO 11894-1:2013 is intended for reproducible, comparable conductivity data used in R&D, product qualification and quality control of ion‑conductive ceramic electrolytes.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Measurement method: AC 4‑terminal (four‑electrode) impedance measurement (current outer terminals, voltage inner terminals).
- Material scope: Oxide‑ion conductors with ionic transference number > 0.99 (electrolytic conduction region).
- Conductivity range: 1 to 1 000 S·m⁻¹.
- Test-piece geometry & preparation:
- Typical dimensions: minimum about 4 mm × 3 mm × 36 mm (commonly 4×3×40 mm).
- Surface roughness Ra < 0.20 μm (report if exceeded).
- At least three test pieces required.
- Bulk density measured per ISO 18754.
- Electrodes:
- Porous, reversible electrodes for oxygen exchange (Pt or Ag recommended).
- Voltage terminals narrow (< 2 mm) and spaced 20 mm in the specimen center; current terminals wide and ≥5 mm from voltage terminals.
- Electrode application options: fired conductive paste, sputtering, or vapor deposition; avoid silica‑based flux binders.
- Instrumentation & measurement system:
- AC impedance meter with true 4‑terminal capability; input resistance > 1 MΩ and input capacitance < 20 pF.
- Common‑mode voltage influence on measured impedance < 1%.
- Lead wires: short, coaxial shielding recommended; instrument ability to correct lead‑wire effects.
- Measurement environment per ISO 554 (recommended 296 ± 2 K, RH 50 ± 5 %).
- Thermal control:
- Electric furnace with uniform hot zone; temperature tolerances ±2 K (<773 K) and ±3 K (773–1273 K).
- Minimize electromagnetic noise from heating equipment.
Applications and users
ISO 11894-1:2013 is most relevant to:
- Materials scientists and laboratories measuring oxide‑ion conductivity of ceramic electrolytes.
- R&D teams and manufacturers developing or qualifying solid electrolyte materials (e.g., for solid oxide fuel cells, oxygen sensors, separation membranes).
- Quality control and test laboratories needing reproducible, comparable impedance‑based conductivity data.
- Suppliers of impedance instrumentation and electrode pastes seeking alignment with measurement best practices.
