This International Standard describes a method for evaluating the degree of cotton-fibre stickiness arising from honeydew contamination through detection of sugar by the colour reaction of a specific treated paper.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12027:2012 - Textiles - Cotton-fibre stickiness - Detection of sugar by colour reaction specifies a lab method to detect sugar (honeydew) on cotton fibres by transferring droplets to a treated filter paper and developing a colour reaction. The standard provides a reproducible procedure to evaluate cotton-fibre stickiness caused by entomological sugars, enabling either visual grading or instrumental image analysis. This helps textile laboratories and manufacturers assess contamination that can cause machine lapping and reduce spinning efficiency.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Method for evaluating cotton stickiness arising from honeydew by detection of sugar via a colour reaction on treated paper (ISO 12027:2012).
- Reagents: p‑aminobenzoic acid, acetone (>99%), phosphoric acid (>85%) and distilled water. Prepare the colour‑reaction solution immediately where possible (acetone is volatile).
- Colour‑reaction paper: Cellulose filter paper (100 mm × 100 mm) impregnated with the solution (pick‑up ~70 ± 5 %) - store refrigerated; use within 30 days.
- Sampling & specimen prep: Take three random 5 g laboratory samples, card/open to produce webs of ~5 mg/cm² and cut 100 mm × 100 mm specimens.
- Transfer & reaction:
- Place sample on treated paper between glass or stainless plates.
- Apply 4 kg on a 100×100 mm area for 1 minute.
- Heat in a convection oven at 120 ± 0.5 °C for 5 minutes to develop brown colour spots from sugars.
- Assessment:
- Visual grading against five replicas: A (non‑stickiness) to E (very severe). Multiple observers recommended.
- Instrumental option: scan at ≥200 dpi and use image analysis to quantify spot number/area.
- Reporting & results: Record individual specimen grades, report the lowest of three specimens (variation should not exceed half a grade). Include test conditions and any deviations.
Applications and users
- Practical for textile testing laboratories, cotton inspection bodies, spinning mills, quality control teams, exporters/importers and cotton breeders.
- Use cases:
- Pre‑processing quality control to prevent machine lapping and downtime.
- Supplier acceptance testing and contract verification.
- Research into cotton stickiness causes and mitigation strategies.
- Correlating stickiness with spinning performance and yarn quality.
