Abstract
Overview
ISO 12117:1997 specifies laboratory tests and performance requirements for Tip‑Over Protection Structures (TOPS) fitted to compact excavators. The standard defines a reproducible static test method to evaluate the load‑carrying and energy‑absorption characteristics of TOPS used on compact excavators with swing‑type booms and an operating mass of 1 000 kg to 6 000 kg. It focuses on lateral load energy, deflection limits, material toughness and test instrumentation to ensure operator crush protection when a machine tips over.
