ISO 12117-2:2008 establishes a consistent and reproducible means of evaluating the load-carrying characteristics of roll-over protective structures (ROPS) for excavators under static loading, and prescribes performance requirements of a representative specimen under such loading. ROPS are to be used where the risk of roll-over exists. ISO 12117-2:2008 applies to ROPS of hydraulic excavators as defined in ISO 6165 with a mass of over 6 t and less than 50 t. It also applies to ROPS for excavator-based or derivated excavators used in object or material handling, demolition or with attachments such as in log-handling and forestry applications. It does not apply to excavators with elevating cab risers.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12117-2:2008 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), focusing on earth-moving machinery roll-over protection. This standard provides laboratory test procedures and performance requirements for roll-over protective structures (ROPS) used on hydraulic excavators with an operating mass over 6 tonnes (t) and less than 50 t. ROPS are critical components designed to safeguard operators in the event of a machine roll-over, ensuring a minimum crush protection zone around a seat-belted operator.
ISO 12117-2:2008 applies to excavators as classified by ISO 6165 and covers standard earth-moving work, material handling, demolition, and forestry applications where the risk of roll-over is present. However, it does not apply to excavators fitted with elevating cab risers. By following this standard, manufacturers and testing organizations can ensure consistent and reliable evaluation of ROPS effectiveness under static loading conditions.
Key Topics
- Scope and Applicability: Specifies requirements for ROPS used on hydraulic excavators over 6 t, including those used with various attachments for tasks such as material handling and forestry.
- Testing Procedures: Describes laboratory methods to evaluate the load-carrying capacity of ROPS under static lateral, longitudinal, and vertical loading conditions.
- Performance Requirements: Prescribes minimum structural and energy absorption criteria to ensure ROPS provide sufficient operator protection without excessive deformation.
- Load Application Guidelines: Details the setup, positioning, and measurement zones for applying forces and measuring deflection during testing.
- Acceptance Criteria: Provides criteria related to deflection limits, structural integrity, and energy absorption to determine ROPS conformity.
- Instrumentation and Reporting: Stipulates required measurement accuracy, the inclusion of relevant structural components in testing, and required test report contents.
- Marking and Labelling: Outlines guidelines for ROPS identification and labelling to confirm compliance with ISO 12117-2:2008.
- Operator’s Manual Requirements: Specifies the need for clear operating instructions regarding ROPS inspected and tested according to this standard.
Applications
- Earth-Moving and Construction: Ensures hydraulic excavators, especially those above 6 t, meet robust safety standards on construction and earth-moving sites, reducing operator risk.
- Material and Object Handling: Applies to excavator-based machines in activities involving heavy lifting, such as demolition, magnet handling, log-handling, and forestry, where roll-over potential is significant.
- Industry Best Practices: Aids manufacturers and safety inspectors in verifying that protective systems meet international safety benchmarks, supporting equipment certification and regulatory compliance.
- Operator Safety Assurance: Provides end-users and fleet operators with confidence in equipment safety, minimizing workplace injuries in hazardous operations.
- Design and Quality Control: Enables equipment manufacturers and ROPS designers to standardize product development and testing, aligning with recognized international guidelines.
