ISO 12215-9:2011 defines the loads and specifies the scantlings of sailing craft appendages on monohull sailing craft with a length of hull of up to 24 m, measured according to ISO 8666. It gives design stresses, the structural components to be assessed, load cases and design loads for keel, centreboard and their attachments, computational methods and modelling guidance, and the means for compliance with its provisions.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12215-9:2012 - Small craft - Hull construction and scantlings - Part 9: Sailing craft appendages specifies the loads and scantlings for appendages on monohull sailing craft with a hull length up to 24 m (measured per ISO 8666). The standard defines design stresses, the structural components to be assessed, typical load cases for keels and centreboards, computational methods and modelling guidance, and the means for demonstrating compliance. It is the Part 9 complement to the ISO 12215 series on hull construction and scantlings.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Applies to monohull sailing craft (L ≤ 24 m) and covers keel, centreboard/daggerboard and their attachments.
- Design stresses and stress factors
- Design stress is calculated as: st = st_LIM × k_MAT × k_LC × k_DC, where st_LIM is the material limit stress and k_MAT, k_LC, k_DC are material, load‑case and design‑category coefficients.
- Load cases (examples)
- Fixed keel at 90° knockdown
- Canted keel steady load at 30° heel with dynamic overload factor
- Keel vertical pounding
- Keelboat longitudinal impact
- Centreboard on capsize‑recoverable dinghies
- Centreboard/daggerboard upwind
- Additional “other load cases” and guidance
- Structural components to assess
- Keel fin and bulb, keel bolts, keel‑to‑hull junction, centreboard trunk and pivots, fastenings and welds.
- Computational methods
- Two assessment routes: (a) advanced 3D numerical methods (finite element analysis and equivalent) with modelling guidance; (b) simplified strength‑of‑materials methods using equations and worked examples in annexes.
- Compliance and documentation
- Includes an application declaration (Annex A) and means for demonstrating conformity.
Practical applications
- Design and scantling determination for keels, centreboards and attachments on small sailing yachts.
- Structural assessment during design iterations using FEM or simplified calculations.
- Retrofit and repair guidance where appendage strength, fastenings or HAZ (weld‑affected zones) are evaluated.
- Safety and classification checks by surveyors, builders and class societies to reduce risk of keel loss or catastrophic failure.
Who should use this standard
- Naval architects and yacht designers
- Small craft structural engineers and finite element analysts
- Boatbuilders, manufacturers and shipyards
- Surveyors, regulators and classification societies assessing small sailing craft
