ISO 12633-1:2011 specifies the technical delivery requirements for hot-finished hollow sections of circular, square or rectangular form. It is applicable to hollow sections formed hot with or without subsequent heat treatment or formed cold with subsequent heat treatment to obtain equivalent metallurgical conditions to those obtained in the hot-formed product. Fine grain steels are generally delivered in the normalized condition. ISO 12633-1:2011 gives the grades, chemical composition and mechanical properties for non-alloy steels and fine grain steels.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12633-1:2011 defines the technical delivery conditions for hot-finished structural hollow sections of circular, square or rectangular form made from non-alloy steels and fine grain steels. It covers hollow sections formed hot (with or without subsequent heat treatment) or formed cold and heat treated to achieve metallurgical equivalence with hot-formed products. The standard provides the framework for steel grades, chemical composition, mechanical properties, delivery conditions and required inspection and testing procedures. Grades and property tables are given in Annex A (non-alloy steels) and Annex B (fine grain steels).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and classification
- Applies to hot-finished circular, square and rectangular hollow sections.
- Non-alloy grades specify qualities JR, J0 and J2 (different impact and deoxidation requirements).
- Fine grain steels specify qualities N and NL (normalized conditions and low-temperature impact criteria).
- Steel designation
- Standardized name format includes designation (ISO 12633-1), “S” for structural steel, minimum yield strength, quality letters (JR/J0/J2 or N/L) and “H” for hollow sections.
- Delivery conditions
- Hot-formed with/without heat treatment, or cold-formed with heat treatment to equivalent metallurgical state.
- Fine grain steels are generally delivered normalized.
- Chemical and mechanical requirements
- Composition and mechanical property limits provided in annexes; purchaser options include product analysis and maximum carbon equivalent (CEV) limits.
- Manufacturing and weld requirements
- Permit seamless or welded manufacturing; specific rules on weld testing, non-destructive testing (eddy current, ultrasonic, radiography, flux leakage) and internal weld bead trimming.
- Inspection, testing and documentation
- Defines inspection types, sample locations and frequency, test methods (tensile, Charpy impact, chemical analysis), marking and inspection certificates.
- Options for purchasers
- Examples: require product analysis, set CEV limits, request impact verification, specify galvanizing suitability, prohibit weld repairs.
Practical applications
ISO 12633-1 is essential where consistent material performance, traceability and fitness-for-purpose are required:
- Structural steel tube manufacturers and mills - to certify product delivery conditions and inspection regimes.
- Structural engineers and designers - to specify material grades and mechanical properties for load-bearing members.
- Fabricators and contractors - to ensure weldability, galvanizing compatibility and NDT criteria are met.
- Procurement and quality inspectors - to verify inspection documents, test reports and compliance with contractual options.
