This document specifies requirements for nickel and nickel alloy castings. The grades specified represent types of alloys suitable for a broad range of application in a wide variety of corrosive and high temperature environments.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12725:2019 - Nickel and nickel alloy castings is an international standard that specifies requirements for the production, testing and delivery of nickel and nickel‑alloy castings. It covers alloy identification, chemical composition, mechanical properties, manufacture (melting, heat treatment, welding), marking and optional supplementary requirements. The grades defined are intended for a broad range of applications in corrosive and high‑temperature environments.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Alloy identification: Principles for naming and identifying nickel alloys (see Annex A). Grades can be referenced by number or descriptive symbol.
- Chemical composition: Defined composition limits for multiple nickel alloys (Table 2). Nickel is reported as a minimum; most other elements have maximum limits. Typical alloying elements include Cr, Mo, Cu, Si, Nb, W and Fe.
- Mechanical properties: Tensile strength, 0.2% proof stress and elongation requirements are specified and tested in accordance with ISO 6892‑1 (Table 3). Test pieces are taken from test blocks produced with the same heat and heat‑treatment history as the castings.
- Manufacture
- Melting: Electric furnace processes with optional refining (AOD) or vacuum induction melting are accepted.
- Heat treatment: Specific heat‑treatment instructions are given per grade (e.g., many alloys require solution treatment at ~1 095 °C–1 205 °C with water quench or rapid cooling).
- Welding: Selection of compatible weld materials is generally at the manufacturer’s discretion; however, some grades (e.g., NC2000 and NC4030) are explicitly restricted from welding.
- Delivery and inspection: Purchaser must supply pattern/drawing, material grade, and any supplementary requirements. Non‑destructive testing (NDT) procedures, acceptance criteria, inspection documents and lot sizes can be specified (see Clause 5 and Annex B).
- Marking and traceability: Marking options include manufacturer symbol, test lot ID and grade designation; small parts may be batched and labeled.
Applications and who uses the standard
ISO 12725:2019 is used by:
- Foundries and casting manufacturers producing nickel and nickel‑alloy components
- Materials and metallurgical engineers designing components for corrosive or high‑temperature service
- Quality, inspection and testing laboratories (mechanical testing per ISO 6892‑1; chemical analysis)
- Procurement and specification writers in oil & gas, chemical processing, power generation, aerospace and marine industries
- Welding engineers and fabricators who must know welding restrictions and compatible filler materials
