ISO 13064-2:2012 specifies the procedures for measuring the road performance of electric motorcycles and mopeds with only a traction battery(ies) as power source for vehicle propulsion. The road performance comprises road operating characteristics such as speed, acceleration and hill climbing ability.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 13064-2:2012 - Battery-electric mopeds and motorcycles - Performance - Part 2: Road operating characteristics - defines standardized procedures to measure the road performance of battery-electric mopeds and motorcycles that use traction battery(ies) only. The standard covers road operating characteristics such as maximum speed, acceleration ability, range at 80% maximum speed, hill starting ability and speed uphill, and prescribes test sequencing, preconditioning and reporting requirements for reproducible results.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and definitions: Applies to battery-electric mopeds and motorcycles with only traction batteries. Key terms include test mass, complete kerb mass, tyre rolling radius, and maximum design total mass.
- Test parameters and accuracy: Units, required measurement accuracy and resolution for time, distance, temperature, air pressure, speed and mass are specified to ensure consistent results.
- Test conditions:
- Ambient temperature limits: outdoor 5–35 °C; indoor 20–30 °C.
- Atmospheric pressure: 91–104 kPa; relative humidity <95%.
- Wind limits and measurement: average wind speed ~3 m/s; gusts up to 5 m/s; stricter limits for single-direction runs.
- Track requirements: flat, smooth paved surface; longitudinal slope ≤0.5% and transverse slope ≤3% for straight or loop tracks.
- Rider and loading: Standard test mass uses the vehicle kerb mass plus a 75 kg rider (±2 kg). Rider clothing, position and recommended dimensions are defined to reduce variability.
- Battery preconditioning and charging: Charging procedures use manufacturer-recommended methods or a standard overnight procedure; end-of-charge criteria and warm-up procedures are specified. Initial battery state for tests: range and maximum speed between 100–90% SOC; acceleration and hill tests start at 65–50% SOC.
- Test sequence and procedures: Tests are arranged so all road characteristics can normally be measured within two days, with battery state carried forward between sequential tests. Individual procedures are provided for range at 80% maximum speed, complete/partial discharge, maximum speed, acceleration, hill start and speed uphill.
- Reporting: Presentation formats and a specimen test result sheet are included (informative annex).
Applications and users
Who uses ISO 13064-2:
- Vehicle manufacturers - design validation, performance claims and R&D.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies - type approval, compliance testing and comparative benchmarking.
- Regulators and standards authorities - harmonized test methods for market surveillance.
- Automotive engineers and product managers - optimizing drivetrain, battery and control strategies for on-road performance.
Practical uses:
- Verifying published top speed, acceleration times and hill-climb capability.
- Generating consistent range and performance data for consumer information and marketing.
- Supporting design trade-offs between energy consumption, motor sizing and gearing.
