This document specifies technical characteristics and strength requirements for fork arm extensions and telescopic fork arms for industrial trucks. It applies to fork arm extensions and telescopic fork arms, as defined in ISO 5053‑2, designed for use on industrial trucks and stacking lift trucks, as defined in ISO 5053‑1, having fork arm carriers and, in the case of fork arm extensions, fork arms conforming to ISO 2330. This document does not apply to integral transverse telescopic fork devices or scissor-action reach devices.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 13284:2022 - "Industrial trucks - Fork arm extensions and telescopic fork arms - Technical characteristics and strength requirements" defines the technical and strength requirements for fork arm extensions and telescopic fork arms used on industrial trucks and stacking lift trucks. The standard applies to attachments as defined in ISO 5053‑1 and ISO 5053‑2 and specifies design limits, testing procedures and information/marking requirements. It excludes integral transverse telescopic fork devices and scissor‑action reach devices.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Rated capacity and load‑centre distance: Requires capacities and load‑centre distances to be specified proportionally to the parent fork arm and, for telescopic arms, to be declared for fully retracted and extended modes.
- Design and strength rules: Defines strength requirements and safety factors for both closed‑section and open‑section extensions and for telescopic fork arms in retracted and extended configurations.
- Test/design loads and procedures: Specifies how to determine and apply test loads (including formulae that account for rated capacity, load‑centre distance, gravity and material yield strength). Physical testing methods such as twin‑point loading and retaining‑system tests are required.
- Material yield verification: Requires tensile testing of representative material samples to determine actual yield strength and to adjust test loads so the minimum specified material still meets the required safety factor.
- Geometric limits and fit: Includes requirements for blade length and limits on lateral clearance between parent fork and extension (total lateral clearance S ≤ 0.1 × blade width b, and ≤ 10 mm), and mandates designs to prevent accidental disengagement.
- Verification, buckling and marking: Procedures for buckling checks, acceptance criteria for tests, and marking plus information for use are specified so users understand rated capacities, safe use and limitations.
Practical applications
- Ensures safe design and use of fork arm extensions and telescopic fork arms for material handling operations where blade length must be increased or varied (double‑deep stacking, pallet handling, variable‑length loads).
- Helps manufacturers validate product strength, test laboratories conduct conformity tests, and fleet managers or safety officers confirm compliance before purchase or use.
- Useful in procurement specifications, CE/conformity dossiers, operator information, and maintenance/inspection regimes.
Who should use this standard
- Fork arm and telescopic arm manufacturers and designers
- Industrial truck OEMs and integrators
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies
- Safety engineers, maintenance teams and procurement specialists in warehousing and logistics
