ISO 13887:2017 is applicable to all grades of cold-reduced steel sheet of higher yield strength with improved formability. The steel is made according to fine-grain practice and has a suitable chemical composition to provide improved formability. The product is intended for the fabrication of parts requiring better formability. It is generally used in the delivered condition. ISO 13887:2017 does not apply to steels designated as commercial quality or drawing quality (see ISO 3574), steels of structural quality (see ISO 4997) or steels of high tensile strength and low yield point with improved formability (see ISO 14590).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 13887:2017 specifies requirements for cold‑reduced steel sheet of higher yield strength with improved formability. It covers production, chemical composition, mechanical properties, surface condition, dimensional tolerances and testing for steel sheet intended for fabrication of parts requiring enhanced formability. Typical product forms are coils and cut lengths (thicknesses from 0.25 mm to 3.2 mm, widths 600 mm and over). The standard is normally used for material in the delivered condition and excludes commercial/drawing quality, structural quality and certain high‑tensile/low‑yield steels.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Grades and chemistry: Defined grades (e.g., 260Y, 300Y, 340Y, 380Y, 420Y, 490Y, 550Y) with maximum limits for C, Mn, S and Si. Additional alloying elements (Cu, Ni, Cr, Mo, Nb, V, Ti) have specified limits and sum constraints for heat and product analyses.
- Mechanical properties: Minimum lower yield strength, tensile strength and elongation requirements are specified per grade (values given for representative gage lengths). Users can request mechanical property reports at shipment.
- Manufacturing practice: Steelmaking and fine‑grain practice are left to the manufacturer unless otherwise agreed; heat analysis and product analysis requirements are defined.
- Testing and sampling: Tensile testing is performed per ISO 6892‑1. One representative transverse sample per lot (≤50 t) is taken; transverse specimens are taken midway between centre and edge of the sheet as rolled.
- Surface and finish: Matte (dull) finish typical; surface condition requirements differ for exposed vs unexposed parts. Oiling is typically applied for rust protection but is removable and not a forming lubricant.
- Weldability: Generally weldable with suitable procedures; however, spot welding becomes more difficult as carbon increases above ~0.15% and grades 490/550 are not recommended for welding due to reduction in strength by welding heat.
- Dimensional tolerances and coil size: Dimensional and shape tolerances referenced to ISO 16162; coil sizes and marking requirements are specified.
Applications and users
ISO 13887 is relevant to:
- Automotive and appliance manufacturers needing higher‑strength, formable cold‑reduced sheet for stamped parts
- Steel producers, mill quality control and metallurgists specifying production and heat analysis
- Fabricators, stampers and welders requiring documented mechanical and surface properties
- Procurement, inspection and standards compliance teams verifying material acceptance
Practical benefits include weight reduction through higher strength combined with improved formability and predictable mechanical and surface performance for forming applications.
