Overview
ISO 13976:2016 - Hot-rolled steel sheet in coils of structural quality and heavy thickness - specifies requirements for hot-rolled carbon–manganese steel sheet in coils produced on a wide sheet mill without microalloying elements. The standard covers product definition, dimensions, chemical composition, manufacturing conditions, mechanical testing and inspection for structural applications (bolted, riveted or welded). It excludes steels for boilers/pressure vessels, commercial/drawing qualities, cold‑reduced products, weathering steels and plate‑mill products.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Product range and form
- Thickness: greater than 6 mm up to 25 mm
- Widths: 600 mm and over, supplied in coils
- Grades and chemistry
- Several grade designations (e.g., HR185, HR235, HR275, HR295, HR325, HR355) with specified maximum heat-analysis limits for C, Mn, P, S, Si and N (see Table 1).
- Limits on additional elements (Cu, Ni, Cr, Mo, Nb, V, Ti) and rules for sums of certain elements (see Table 2).
- Heat analysis by the manufacturer and optional product analysis by purchaser with defined tolerances (Table 3).
- Manufacture and condition
- Produced on wide sheet mill; delivered commonly in as-rolled (AR) or descaled and oiled (DO) conditions.
- Manufacturer’s methods generally at their discretion unless otherwise agreed; purchaser may request process information.
- Mechanical and test requirements
- Mechanical properties required at shipment are given in the standard (Table 4) and are verified by tensile and impact testing per referenced methods.
- Normative test standards include ISO 6892-1 (tensile testing) and ISO 148-1 (Charpy impact).
- Sampling, retests and resubmission rules are specified (Clauses 6–9).
- Weldability and surface
- Generally suitable for welding; descaling may be required depending on welding method. Note: spot welding becomes more difficult when carbon > 0.15 %.
- Dimensional and shape tolerances
- Specific tolerances provided including camber limit: not to exceed 25 mm per 5 000 mm.
Applications and users
ISO 13976:2016 is intended for:
- Structural steel fabricators and designers (bridges, building frames, heavy machinery)
- Steel producers and mill quality departments
- Procurement and inspection engineers specifying coil sheet for bolted, riveted or welded constructions
- Welding engineers assessing suitability and preparatory requirements (descaling/oiling)
- Test laboratories performing tensile and impact verification
