Abstract
Overview
ISO 14258:1998 - Industrial automation systems - Concepts and rules for enterprise models defines the high‑level concepts and rules for creating computer‑understandable enterprise models in manufacturing and industrial automation. It establishes a systems‑theory foundation and specifies what an enterprise model should represent (purpose, structure, behavior, hierarchy and life‑cycle aspects) to improve consistency and enable model interoperability. The standard is normative about concepts and guidance for standards bodies, implementers, and model builders, but it does not define specific enterprise processes, organizational structures, data sets, or the enterprise‑modeling procedure itself.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Systems theory basis: Models must align with structural, behavioral and hierarchical aspects of systems theory - treating elements, subsystems and supersystems with clear abstraction levels.
- Enterprise model definition: A model is an abstraction representing an enterprise’s goals, operations and organization; it must show elements, decomposition and information requirements.
- Life‑cycle concepts: Addresses life‑cycle phases (plan/build, use/operate, recycle/dispose), recursion, iteration and issue‑solving activities relevant to products, processes and enterprises.
- Hierarchy and structure: Rules for representing hierarchical decomposition and structural interdependencies so emergent properties and multi‑level behavior are captured.
- Behavior representation: Guidance for static and dynamic behavior modeling (state, time representation, sequentiality, short‑term and long‑term change).
- Views and observers: Encourages using multiple model views (for example, information view and function view) to relate real‑world observers to model elements and purposes.
- Semantics and syntax: Models must carry explicit syntax (permissible arrangements/relations) and semantics (meaning of elements/relations) appropriate to model purpose and boundaries.
- Data availability & format: Model information must be available to humans and machines in neutral or application‑specified formats to support operation.
- Configuration management: Constituent parts of enterprise models must be manageable by automated configuration‑management systems.
- Factors of production: Models should address handling of people, materials, information, energy, capital and tools across life‑cycle phases.
- Interoperability requirements: Sets out concepts needed for standardization to support model integration and interoperability between systems.
Applications
- Creating interoperable enterprise and process models for manufacturing automation
- Serving as a conceptual foundation for standards bodies developing detailed enterprise‑modeling standards
- Guiding system architects and implementers to design models with consistent semantics, structure and lifecycle considerations
- Enabling information exchange between enterprise systems and reducing “islands of integration”
Who Uses It
- Standards developers and technical committees in enterprise integration
- Enterprise modelers, systems architects and integrators
- Implementers of industrial automation solutions seeking model interoperability
- Enterprise planners, builders and analysts checking model completeness and consistency
Related Standards
ISO 14258 is a conceptual framework intended to underpin more detailed enterprise‑modeling and integration standards within industrial automation and systems integration domains.
