ISO 1452-5:2009 specifies the characteristics for the fitness for purpose of unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC‑U) piping systems intended for water supply and for buried and above-ground drainage and sewerage under pressure. It also specifies the test parameters for the test methods referred to. In conjunction with ISO 1452-1, ISO 1452-2, ISO 1452-3 and ISO 1452-4, it is applicable to joints and assemblies with components of PVC‑U, other plastics and non-plastics materials intended to be used for the following: - water mains and services buried in ground; - conveyance of water above ground for both outside and inside buildings; - buried and above-ground drainage and sewerage under pressure; It is applicable to piping systems intended for the supply of water under pressure up to and including 25 °C (cold water) intended for human consumption and for general purposes as well as for waste water under pressure. It is also applicable to components for the conveyance of water and waste water up to and including 45 °C.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 1452-5:2009 (PVC‑U fitness for purpose)
ISO 1452-5:2009 is Part 5 of the ISO 1452 series covering plastics piping systems made from unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC‑U) for water supply and for buried and above‑ground drainage and sewerage under pressure. It specifies the fitness for purpose requirements and the test parameters for joints, assemblies and systems used for conveying cold water (≤25 °C) for human consumption and general purposes, and for wastewater. Components intended for conveyance up to 45 °C are also covered.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope of applicability: water mains, services buried in ground, above‑ground conveyance (inside/outside buildings) and pressure drainage/sewerage.
- Types of assemblies covered:
- Non‑end‑load‑bearing (elastomeric sealing‑ring/socket joints, mechanical joints).
- End‑load‑bearing (solvent‑cement joints, flanged joints, double‑socket joints).
- Test methods and standards referenced:
- Representative test parameters (as specified):
- Short‑term hydrostatic test example: 100 min with angular deflection 2°; ambient 15–25 °C.
- Short‑term negative pressure: negative air ≤ 0.05 bar, deflection 2°, deformation 5%.
- Long‑term hydrostatic tests: 1 000 h at test pressures expressed as multiples of PN (e.g., 1.7·PN at 20 °C for d ≤ 90 mm; 1.3·PN at 40 °C).
- Long‑term test pressures are related to creep considerations for PVC‑U (Annex B) to simulate 50‑year performance.
- Assembly instructions of component manufacturers must be followed; PN refers to nominal pressure rating of fitting or pipe.
Practical applications and users
Who uses ISO 1452-5:
- Manufacturers of PVC‑U pipes, fittings, valves and ancillaries for product development and type testing.
- Testing laboratories and conformity assessment bodies performing leaktightness, hydrostatic and negative‑pressure tests.
- Engineers, specifiers and utilities drafting material and system specifications for drinking water distribution, sewerage under pressure and buried mains.
- Installers and quality managers ensuring assemblies meet system fitness‑for‑purpose requirements.
Benefits:
- Ensures consistent performance and safety of PVC‑U pressure piping systems.
- Supports compliance with national regulations and harmonizes test regimes across suppliers.

- ISO 13783, ISO 13844, ISO 13845, ISO 13846 (test methods)
- Annex A covers imperial (inch) assemblies; Annex B details creep‑based determination of long‑term test pressure.
