This part of ISO 14529 specifies the requirements for the physical and chemical properties of phenolic powder moulding compounds (MP-PMCs) and compression- or injection-moulded test specimens produced from them. It is limited to those powder moulding compounds whose composition and properties are significantly different. It is further limited to those moulding compounds which are of general technical and/or economic importance. The properties which are used to characterize the moulding compounds, the test methods and the test conditions are selected from those given in ISO 14529-2. The moulding compounds are divided into types according to their composition and properties. The various types are designated using the designation system defined in ISO 14529-1.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14529-3:1999 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies the requirements for melamine/phenolic powder moulding compounds (MP-PMCs). This part 3 of the ISO 14529 series focuses on the physical and chemical properties of selected phenolic powder moulding compounds and the test specimens produced by compression or injection moulding. The standard applies to MP-PMCs with significantly different compositions and properties that hold general technical or economic importance in various industries.
This standard is essential for manufacturers, quality assurance personnel, and product developers working with thermosetting plastics, particularly melamine and phenolic-based powder moulding compounds. It ensures consistent quality, safety, and performance in the production and testing of these moulding materials.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability
Defines requirements for physical and chemical characteristics of selected MP-PMCs and compression/injection-moulded test specimens. Applies only to powder moulding compounds with significant differences in formulation and general industrial relevance. -
Property Requirements
Specifies mandatory property limits including mechanical strength, thermal resistance, and electrical properties. Key test parameters include:- Flexural and tensile strength
- Charpy impact resistance (including notched specimens)
- Heat deflection temperatures
- Electrical resistivity and dissipation factor
- Water absorption and inflammability rating
-
Testing Methods
Test methods and conditions are selected from ISO 14529-2, ensuring harmonized testing protocols for comparable results. -
Designation System
The types of powders are classified according to ISO 14529-1, providing a systematic nomenclature based on composition and properties. -
Material Composition
Requirements on fillers and reinforcement materials including their nature and mass content are defined. Reinforcements such as glass fibers and mineral fillers impact mechanical and electrical performance. -
Comparative Table
Annex A provides comparison of ISO designations with other international and national standards, facilitating global trade and standard alignment.
Applications
ISO 14529-3 is relevant in industries where melamine/phenolic powder moulding compounds are used for manufacturing durable molded parts:
-
Electrical and Electronic Components
Due to the excellent electrical insulating properties and heat resistance, MP-PMCs are widely used in switchgear, connectors, and housings. -
Automotive Industry
High mechanical strength and thermal stability make these compounds suitable for under-the-hood applications and safety components. -
Consumer Goods
Durable molded products such as kitchenware and decorative hardware utilize MP-PMCs for their chemical resistance and aesthetic qualities. -
Industrial Equipment
Components requiring flame retardancy, moisture resistance, and long-term mechanical integrity benefit from compliance with ISO 14529-3.
By adhering to this standard, manufacturers ensure product reliability, safety compliance, and process optimization when working with melamine/phenolic molding powders.
