ISO 14952-3:2003 provides sampling and analytical test methods to validate the cleanliness levels of parts and components that have been precision cleaned, and identifies processes that may be used for the verification of cleanliness in ground support equipment, launch vehicles and spacecraft. ISO 14952-3:2003 is used to sample and verify the level of cleanliness of parts and components that have been precision cleaned and applies equally to parts, components and systems in ground support equipment, launch vehicles and spacecraft.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14952-3:2003 defines sampling and analytical procedures for verifying surface cleanliness of fluid systems used in space applications. The standard specifies methods to determine nonvolatile residues (NVR) and particulate contamination on precision‑cleaned parts and components for ground support equipment, launch vehicles and spacecraft. It supports acceptance inspection, verification testing and documentation of cleanliness levels for critical fluid system surfaces.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Acceptance inspection: Visual inspection for moisture, corrosion, grease and visible particulates; pH (acidity/alkalinity) testing of rinsed surfaces (pH 5.0–8.0) using high‑purity water per ISO 14951-10.
- Test fluid‑flush procedures: Defined solvent and aqueous flush methods to sample critical surfaces. Standard test sample volume is 500 ml (minimum surface area 0.1 m² to maximum 0.5 m²); 100 ml sampling permitted for small items with customer approval.
- Test fluid requirements: Solvents must be filtered to remove >1 µm particulates and meet NVR limits (commonly ≤10 mg/l; ≤50 mg/l allowed when NVR analysis not required). Specific solvent restrictions apply (e.g., isopropanol/ethanol not allowed for oxidizer systems unless special precautions; halogenated solvents must not be used on titanium).
- Particle contamination analysis: Microscopic particle population counts and use of validated automatic particle counters where correlated with accepted methods (see Clause 5.2).
- NVR analysis methods: Multiple analytical options are described, including gravimetric NVR, infrared (IR) spectrometry, mass spectrometry (MS), GC/MS, solvent purity meters and aqueous total carbon (TC) methods - provided accuracy and repeatability are demonstrated and customer‑approved.
- Drying and post‑test handling: Components must be thoroughly dried after testing; purge drying with Type A nitrogen or filtered helium is specified for internal surfaces.
Practical applications and users
ISO 14952-3 is used by:
- Aerospace cleanliness engineers and QA/QC teams validating fluid system hardware
- Test laboratories performing particulate and NVR analyses
- Suppliers of precision‑cleaned parts for launch vehicles, spacecraft, and ground support equipment
- Integration and assembly teams responsible for acceptance inspection and verification of cleanliness before system assembly or flight
The standard helps mitigate contamination risks that can impair valves, sensors, propulsion or life‑support fluid systems, supporting mission reliability and safety.
