ISO 15837:2004 provides the performance characteristics and qualification tests required for gasketed mechanical couplings, including grooved-type mechanical couplings for grooved-end pipe, mechanical restraint couplings for plain-end pipe and mechanical compression couplings for plain-end pipe. These couplings are for use at temperatures within the recommended temperature range of their respective gaskets.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15837:2004 - Ships and marine technology - Gasketed mechanical couplings for use in piping systems - Performance specification - defines performance characteristics and qualification tests for gasketed mechanical couplings (GMCs) used in shipboard and marine piping systems. The standard covers grooved-type mechanical couplings for grooved-end pipe and plain-end mechanical couplings (mechanical restraint and compression types) and applies when couplings are used within the temperature limits of their gaskets.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and classification
- Covers Type I (grooved mechanical couplings) and Type II (plain-end mechanical couplings).
- Joint classes: Class 1 (rigid, restrained), Class 2 (flexible, restrained), Class 3 (flexible, unrestrained).
- Working pressure grades established by qualification testing (document notes typical range approx. 0.7 MPa to 30 MPa; consult manufacturer for specific ratings).
- Qualification testing
- Detailed performance tests (see Annex A) required to qualify a GMC design; tests are repeated after design, material or process changes that may affect performance.
- Specimen preparation: test assemblies must use the same type, working pressure and class; sizes tested must include smallest, intermediate and largest in the product range (interpolation allowed; extrapolation prohibited).
- Penalty runs and retests: procedures for failures that are design-related or unrelated; additional specimens and corrective-action reporting requirements.
- Materials, workmanship and inspection
- Materials used must be those qualified in testing and agreed with purchaser.
- Machined and unmachined surfaces must be free of defects affecting serviceability.
- Test facilities must maintain calibrated measuring and test equipment.
- Testing conditions
- Acceptable test fluids include water, air, or nitrogen; tests conducted within specified temperature ranges or ambient conditions where not specified.
- Pass criteria require meeting or exceeding performance requirements for each test.
- Documentation
- Manufacturers must retain a qualification test report and include failure analysis and corrective actions when applicable.
- Ordering information and specimen identification requirements are specified.
Applications and users
ISO 15837:2004 is intended for:
- Shipbuilders, marine engineers and naval architects specifying piping joints.
- Coupling manufacturers (product design qualification and production control).
- Piping system designers and procurement/specification engineers for offshore and shipboard systems.
- Testing laboratories and classification societies evaluating joint performance and compliance. Practical uses include selecting and qualifying gasketed mechanical couplings for fire mains, bilge systems, sea water service, HVAC and other marine piping where reliable sealing and, where required, mechanical restraint are needed.
Related standards and guidance
- Prepared by ISO/TC 8 (Ships and marine technology), Subcommittee SC 3 (Piping and machinery).
- Users should also consult relevant marine piping, material and classification society rules and the GMC manufacturer’s product documentation when applying ISO 15837:2004.
