ISO 15877-5:2009 specifies the characteristics of the fitness for purpose of chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-C) piping systems, intended to be used for hot and cold water installations within buildings for the conveyance of water, whether or not intended for human consumption, (domestic systems) and for heating systems, under design pressures and temperatures according to the class of application. ISO 15877-5:2009 covers a range of service conditions (application classes) and design pressure classes. It does not apply if the values of the design temperature, maximum design temperature and malfunction temperature are in excess of those given in ISO 15877-1:2009. ISO 15877-5:2009 specifies the test parameters for the test methods to which it refers. In conjunction with the other parts of ISO 15877, it is applicable to PVC-C pipes and fittings, their joints and joints with components of other plastics and non-plastics materials intended to be used for hot and cold water installations.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15877-5:2009 - "Plastics piping systems for hot and cold water installations - Chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC‑C) - Part 5: Fitness for purpose of the system" defines the fitness-for-purpose requirements and test parameters for PVC‑C piping systems used in domestic hot and cold water and heating installations. The standard applies to PVC‑C pipes, fittings, joints and interfaces with other plastics or non‑plastic components under the design pressures and temperatures of the applicable application classes. It also clarifies limits - it does not apply when design or malfunction temperatures exceed values given in ISO 15877‑1:2009.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Covers PVC‑C systems for conveyance of water (potable or non‑potable) and heating systems, aligned with design pressure and application classes from ISO 15877‑1.
- Test methods and parameters: Specifies the test parameters to be used with referenced test methods (ISO 1167‑1 and several EN methods). Tests include:
- Internal (hydrostatic) pressure testing for solvent‑cement and mechanical joints, with defined test pressures derived from material stresses, design stress and class of service.
- Pull‑out (end‑load) testing for mechanical joints (EN 712).
- Thermal cycling to evaluate resistance to temperature fluctuations (EN 12293).
- Pressure cycling to assess joint durability under repeated pressure changes (EN 12295).
- Leaktightness under vacuum where applicable (EN 12294).
- Assembly and test preparation: Requires tests be performed on assemblies built per manufacturer instructions (e.g., solvent‑cement setting times and end‑cap arrangements to transfer axial forces).
- Acceptance criteria: Joints and system assemblies shall not leak and shall meet performance criteria given for each test type.
Practical applications and users
Who uses ISO 15877‑5:2009:
- Manufacturers of PVC‑C pipes, fittings and jointing systems for product design, type‑testing and conformity assessment.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies applying defined test parameters and procedures.
- Specifiers, consulting engineers and building services designers selecting piping materials for domestic hot/cold water and heating systems.
- Installers and contractors who need to follow validated assembly and jointing practices to ensure system fitness for purpose. Practical benefits include consistent performance verification, reduced installation failures, and harmonized criteria for product acceptance.
