ISO 15877-1:2009 specifies the general requirements of chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-C) piping systems intended to be used for hot and cold water installations within buildings for the conveyance of water, whether or not intended for human consumption (domestic systems) and for heating systems, under design pressures and temperatures appropriate to the class of application. It covers a range of service conditions (classes of application), design pressures and pipe dimension classes. It does not apply if the values of the design temperature, maximum design temperature and malfunction temperature are in excess of those given. ISO 15877-1:2009 also specifies the test parameters for the test methods to which it refers. In conjunction with the other parts of ISO 15877, it is applicable to PVC-C pipes and fittings, their joints and joints with components of other plastics and non-plastics materials intended to be used for hot and cold water installations.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15877-1:2009 - "Plastics piping systems for hot and cold water installations - Chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC‑C) - Part 1: General" defines the general requirements and test parameters for PVC‑C piping systems used inside buildings for hot and cold water and heating systems. It covers service classes, design pressures and temperatures appropriate to the class of application, and the test parameters for referenced methods. ISO 15877‑1 is the general (Part 1) document intended to be used together with the other parts of the ISO 15877 series covering pipes, fittings and system fitness-for-purpose.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope and application: Applies to PVC‑C pipes, fittings, joints and connections with other plastic or non‑plastic components for domestic water (potable or non‑potable) and heating systems - within the design limits given in the standard (see Table 1). It explicitly does not apply if design, maximum design or malfunction temperatures exceed the values in the standard.
- Material characteristics: Requirements and checks for PVC‑C material properties such as density, chlorine content and hydrostatic stress behaviour; allowance for virgin and reprocessable material where specified.
- Service classifications: Defines classes of application (service conditions), corresponding design pressures and pipe dimension classes to guide selection and specification.
- Mechanical and long‑term performance: Refers to long‑term hydrostatic strength assessment (ISO 9080) and defines hydrostatic stress, design stress and the lower predictive limit (LPL) as material performance metrics.
- Geometry and tolerances: Terms and definitions for nominal size, outside/inside diameter, wall thickness, pipe series (S) and tolerances to ensure interchangeability and correct hydraulic performance.
- Temperature limits: Includes definitions for design temperature (TD), maximum design temperature (Tmax) and malfunction temperature (Tmal) and specifies test method parameters - Annex A contains a normative test for verifying Tmal for PVC‑C Type‑I material.
- Water quality and safety: Notes on potential influence on water intended for human consumption and the need to observe national regulations; safety guidance when using solvent cements.
Applications and Users
Who uses ISO 15877‑1:2009:
- Pipe and fitting manufacturers (product specification and testing)
- System designers and consulting engineers (selection for hot/cold water and heating systems)
- Installers and contractors (understanding system limits and compatibility)
- Regulatory bodies and conformity assessors (assessment of fitness for purpose)
- Specifiers and procurement teams (ensuring compliance with design pressure/temperature classes)
Practical applications:
- Domestic potable water distribution and recirculating heating systems inside buildings
- Specification of PVC‑C piping systems where elevated temperature resistance and chemical compatibility are required
