ISO 15877-2:2009 specifies the requirements of pipes made from chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-C) for piping systems intended to be used for hot and cold water installations within buildings for the conveyance of water, whether or not intended for human consumption (domestic systems) and for heating systems, under design pressures and temperatures appropriate to the class of application. ISO 15877-2:2009 covers a range of service conditions (application classes), design pressures and pipe series. It does not apply if the values of the design temperature, maximum design temperature and malfunction temperature are in excess of those given in ISO 15877-1:2009. ISO 15877-2:2009 also specifies the test parameters for the test methods to which it refers. In conjunction with the other parts of ISO 15877, it is applicable to PVC-C pipes, their joints and joints with components of PVC-C, other plastics and non-plastics materials intended to be used for hot and cold water installations.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15877-2:2009 - Plastics piping systems for hot and cold water installations - Chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC‑C) - Part 2: Pipes specifies requirements for PVC‑C pipes used inside buildings for the conveyance of hot and cold water (domestic and heating systems). It is one part of the ISO 15877 system standard and defines applicable service (application) classes, design pressures and temperatures, and the test parameters for referenced test methods. The standard applies only within the temperature and pressure limits given in ISO 15877‑1:2009.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Material requirements: Defines acceptable PVC‑C resin formulations and permissible additives for pipe manufacture and requires evaluation of material performance for long‑term use.
- Hydrostatic strength / σ‑value evaluation: Requires determination of long‑term hydrostatic strength using ISO 9080 and internal pressure tests per ISO 1167‑1/2. Test temperatures cited include 20 °C, 60–70 °C and 95 °C (Type I) or 100 °C (Type II). Results must meet reference curves for expected hydrostatic strength.
- Geometrical characteristics: Specifies dimensional tolerances, wall thicknesses, chamfering and opacity requirements to ensure fit and function with fittings and jointing methods.
- Mechanical and physical characteristics: Covers resistance to internal pressure, impact resistance (e.g., EN 744 round‑the‑clock method), tensile strength (ISO 6259 series), long‑term behaviour and Vicat softening considerations (EN 727).
- Performance & testing: Lists performance requirements and the test parameters for the referenced standards to demonstrate conformity (tensile, pressure, impact, long‑term creep).
- Marking and documentation: Minimum marking requirements for traceability and product identification, plus guidance on adhesives and surface appearance.
- Fitness for water quality: Material conformity with ISO 15877‑1 regarding influence on water intended for human consumption.
Applications and users
ISO 15877‑2 is intended for:
- Manufacturers of PVC‑C pipes and components
- Test laboratories and quality assurance teams validating long‑term hydrostatic strength and mechanical performance
- Specifiers, consulting engineers and building services designers selecting piping materials for domestic hot/cold water and heating installations
- Installers, plumbers and procurement professionals ensuring compliant products for building projects
- Regulators and conformity assessment bodies assessing product fitness and marking
