ISO 16000-29:2014 specifies test methods of the performance of VOC detectors that are designed to monitor indoor and living atmosphere VOC concentration as well as to control indoor air quality in portable, mobile, and remote applications. The provisions in ISO 16000-29:2014 cover VOCs detectors as well as detectors for individual VOCs. ISO 16000-29:2014 sets out only the requirements applicable to a test method of VOC detectors such as response time, stability, and measuring range.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16000-29:2014 - "Indoor air - Part 29: Test methods for VOC detectors" defines standardized test methods to assess the performance of VOC detectors used for monitoring indoor and living-atmosphere volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The standard covers detectors that report total VOC mixtures as well as detectors for individual VOCs and sets out the requirements applicable to detector test methods such as response time, stability, measuring range, and susceptibility to poisoning.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and classification
- Applies to portable, mobile and remote VOC detectors intended for indoor air quality monitoring and control.
- Distinguishes between detectors for specific VOCs and detectors for VOC mixtures.
- Performance parameters
- Response time, final indication, stability (stabilization is defined as three successive readings with ≤10% change), measuring range, and warm-up time.
- Tests for poisoning and long-term stability are included.
- Test procedure essentials
- Tests are normally performed on one detector; a second instrument may be used for poisoning tests.
- The drop test is to be performed at the beginning of the test sequence.
- Devices must be prepared and mounted as representative of typical use, with required calibration, zero/span adjustments and warm-up performed beforehand.
- Considerations for battery-powered units and software-controlled detectors (e.g., low-battery indication, software faults, data conversion/transmission errors).
- Test gases and delivery
- Selection of test gas mixtures and methods for gas delivery are specified (see Annex C for selection of test gas and Annex D for diffusion-tube method). Test equipment examples include mask-type, flow-type, and chamber-type gas delivery systems.
- Detection principles
- Recognizes multiple detector technologies: semiconducting, photoionization detector (PID), and interference-enhanced reflection (polymer-film) types, noting that different principles yield non-equivalent readings for mixtures.
Practical applications
- Use ISO 16000-29 when validating or comparing VOC detectors for:
- Indoor air quality (IAQ) monitoring and screening
- Source identification and localization of VOC emissions
- Control of ventilation and HVAC systems based on VOC levels
- Product development, QA/QC and third‑party performance testing of portable and fixed VOC instruments
Who should use this standard
- Instrument manufacturers and R&D teams developing VOC detectors
- Test laboratories and QA/QC facilities performing performance verification
- Indoor air quality consultants, building managers and HVAC engineers specifying or commissioning monitoring equipment
- Regulatory bodies and procurement teams seeking objective test methods for VOC detection performance
