ISO 16276-2:2007 specifies procedures for rating the resistance of coating systems when a cut in the form of a right-angle lattice pattern (cross-cut) or in the form of an X (X-cut) is made into the coating, penetrating through to the substrate. It also specifies suitable equipment and defines inspection areas, sampling plans and acceptance/rejection criteria. It does not specify ratings for particular coating systems.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16276-2:2007 specifies field procedures for assessing the adhesion/cohesion (fracture strength) of protective paint coatings on steel structures using cross‑cut testing and X‑cut (St. Andrew’s cross) testing. The standard defines suitable equipment, inspection areas, sampling plans and acceptance/rejection criteria, and provides guidance for test panels and site conditioning. It supplements the ISO 12944 corrosion‑protection series but does not prescribe ratings for specific coating systems.
Key topics and requirements
- Test methods: Two destructive qualitative methods are covered:
- Cross‑cut test (ISO 2409 referenced): matrix of right‑angle cuts through the coating to form squares; assessment on a 0–5 damage scale. Suitable for film thicknesses up to 250 µm.
- X‑cut test (based on ASTM D3359, Method A): two cuts form an X; adhesive tape is applied and removed, then rated (Annex A provides rating classification).
- Equipment and materials: multiple‑blade or single‑blade cutters, templates, and transparent pressure‑sensitive adhesive tape in accordance with referenced standards.
- Sampling and inspection: inspection areas and sampling plans are defined to ensure representative field assessment of coated structures.
- Site conditions and conditioning:
- Tests are destructive; repair is required after testing.
- Coatings must be dried/cured per manufacturer recommendations. If none are supplied, a minimum drying period of 10 days at substrate temperature >15 °C and relative humidity <80 % is recommended before testing.
- Environmental conditions (air temperature, relative humidity, surface temperature, weather over prior 24 h) must be monitored and reported.
- Test panels: two conditioning options provided to trace panels to the structure and control curing/storage [(23 ± 2) °C, (50 ± 5) % RH].
- Reporting and interpretation: results expressed using the qualitative rating scale; Annex A provides X‑cut classification. The standard aims to reduce variability and standardize acceptance criteria for site fracture‑strength testing.
Applications
- Quality control and field inspection of protective paint systems on bridges, offshore structures, industrial steelwork and other coated steel assets.
- Used by: corrosion engineers, coating inspectors, contractors, asset owners, specification writers, and paint manufacturers for acceptance testing and on‑site verification.
- Practical for verifying coating adhesion, detecting poor surface preparation or application defects, and supporting maintenance and repair decisions.
