ISO 16283-1:2014 specifies procedures to determine the airborne sound insulation between two rooms in a building using sound pressure measurements. These procedures are intended for room volumes in the range from 10 m3 to 250 m3 in the frequency range from 50 Hz to 5 000 Hz. The test results can be used to quantify, assess and compare the airborne sound insulation in unfurnished or furnished rooms where the sound field may or may not approximate to a diffuse field. The measured airborne sound insulation is frequency-dependent and can be converted into a single number quantity to characterize the acoustic performance using the rating procedures in ISO 717‑1.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16283-1:2014 - "Acoustics - Field measurement of sound insulation in buildings and of building elements - Part 1: Airborne sound insulation" - specifies field procedures to determine airborne sound insulation between two rooms using sound pressure measurements. It applies to room volumes from 10 m³ to 250 m³ and the frequency range 50 Hz to 5 000 Hz. Results are frequency-dependent and can be converted to a single‑number rating using ISO 717-1.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Measurement in furnished or unfurnished rooms where the sound field may or may not be diffuse.
- Frequency and volume limits: Intended for 50 Hz–5 000 Hz and room volumes 10–250 m³; includes a specific low-frequency procedure (50, 63, 80 Hz one‑third octave bands).
- Measurement quantity: Energy-average sound pressure levels in source and receiving rooms; level difference (D) calculation to quantify airborne insulation.
- Microphone methods: Supported measurement techniques include fixed microphone positions, mechanized continuously‑moving microphones, and manually‑scanned microphones (hand‑held or on a rod).
- Reverberation time: Procedures to measure reverberation time in the receiving room (default and low‑frequency methods) as it affects insulation calculations.
- Background noise corrections: Guidance on measuring and correcting for background noise in the receiving room.
- Instrumentation and calibration: Requirements reference established electroacoustic standards (calibrators and sound level meters) and calibration/verification procedures.
- Data processing: Conversion to octave bands, energy averaging, uncertainty estimation, and recording/reporting formats.
- Annexes: Practical guidance including loudspeaker requirements, example layouts for horizontal/vertical measurements, and forms for recording results.
Practical applications and users
ISO 16283-1 is used to:
- Verify and compare airborne sound insulation of partitions, walls, doors and building elements in situ.
- Support regulatory compliance, building certification and post‑construction verification.
- Guide acoustic design, building remediation and product validation (e.g., proprietary wall systems, glazing). Primary users:
- Acoustic consultants and test laboratories
- Architects, façade and building services engineers
- Building inspectors, developers and contractors
- Manufacturers of building elements and acoustic products
