This document specifies the general characteristics of solid-wall pipes made of oriented unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-O) for piping systems intended to be used underground or above-ground (where protected from direct sunlight), for water supply, buried drainage, sewerage, treated waste water and irrigation under pressure. In conjunction with ISO 16422-2, ISO/TS 16422-3, ISO 16422-5 and ISO 1452-4, this document is applicable to PVC-O pipes and PVC-O fittings, as well as to valves, their joints and to joints with components of other plastics and non-plastics materials intended to be used for the following: a) water mains and services lines; b) conveyance of water for both outside and inside buildings; c) drainage, sewerage and treated wastewater under pressure; d) irrigation under pressure. This document is applicable to piping systems intended for the supply of water under pressure up to and including 25 °C (cold water), intended for human consumption and for general purposes as well as for wastewater under pressure. This document is also applicable to components for the conveyance of water and wastewater up to and including 45 °C. For temperatures between 25 °C and 45 °C, see ISO 16422-2:2023, Figure C.1. The piping system according to this document is intended for the conveyance of cold water up to pressures of 25 bar[1] and especially in those applications where special performance requirements are needed, such as impact loads and pressure fluctuations, up to pressure of 25 bar. [1] 1 bar = 0,1 MPa = 105 Pa; 1 MPa = 1 N/mm2
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16422-1:2024 establishes the general requirements for pipes and joints made of oriented unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-O), specifically engineered for the conveyance of water under pressure. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), this standard focuses on solid-wall PVC-O piping systems suitable for underground or above-ground use (where protected from direct sunlight). These systems are designed for applications such as water supply (including potable water), buried drainage, sewerage, treated wastewater, and irrigation under pressure.
Part 1 of the ISO 16422 series outlines the key material properties, classification criteria, and performance parameters required for PVC-O pipes, fittings, valves, and compatible joints, ensuring reliability for end users and manufacturers.
Key Topics
- Material and Composition:
PVC-O compounds must be unplasticized, with strict controls on additives to avoid toxicity, contamination, or negative impacts on mechanical properties. - Pipe and Fitting Classification:
Provides criteria for classifying pipes based on minimum required strength (MRS) and design stress, and fittings based on PN (Nominal Pressure) class. - Design Parameters:
Addresses material strength, wall thickness, and dimension ratios, supporting the design of high-performance, pressure-rated water systems. - Service Conditions:
Suitable for cold water up to 25 °C (intended for human consumption and general use) and wastewater under pressure. Components may also be used up to 45 °C as referenced in ISO 16422-2. - System Compatibility:
Applies to connections between PVC-O pipes, fittings, and valves, as well as joints with other plastic and non-plastic piping components. - Use of Reprocessed Material:
Allows the use of manufacturer’s own reprocessed feedstock but prohibits externally-sourced recycled materials for safety and performance. - National Regulatory Compliance:
Special considerations for compounds in contact with drinking water to align with applicable national regulations and health requirements.
Applications
Piping systems conforming to ISO 16422-1 are widely used in:
- Water Mains and Service Lines:
Infrastructure for transmitting potable water in municipal and private water networks, both underground and above-ground (provided protection from direct sunlight). - Building Water Supply:
Conveying water outside and inside buildings, ensuring safe and reliable delivery for human consumption and utility purposes. - Pressurized Drainage and Sewerage:
Transporting wastewater and treated effluent under pressure, contributing to municipal and industrial sanitation and waste management. - Irrigation Systems:
High-strength, impact-resistant piping for agricultural and landscape irrigation operating at pressures up to 25 bar. - Special Environments:
Applications requiring elevated resistance to impact loading or pressure fluctuations, such as fluctuating demand or challenging installation conditions.
