This document specifies the general properties of unplasticized polyamide (PA-U) compounds for the manufacture of pipes, fittings and valves made from these compounds, intended to be buried and used for the supply of gaseous fuels. It also specifies the test parameters for the test methods to which it refers. The ISO 16486 series is applicable to PA-U piping systems, the components of which are connected by fusion jointing and/or mechanical jointing. This document establishes a calculation and design scheme on which to base the maximum operating pressure (MOP) of a PA-U piping system. NOTE For the purpose of this document the term gaseous fuels includes, for example, natural gas, methane, butane, propane, hydrogen, manufactured gas, biogas, and mixtures of these gases.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16486-1:2023 - "Plastics piping systems for the supply of gaseous fuels - Unplasticized polyamide (PA‑U) piping systems with fusion jointing and mechanical jointing - Part 1: General" - defines the general material and system-level requirements for buried PA‑U piping systems used to convey gaseous fuels (for example, natural gas, methane, hydrogen, propane, biogas). It specifies the required properties of unplasticized polyamide (PA‑U) compounds for pipes, fittings and valves, the test parameters referenced by the standard, and a calculation/design scheme for establishing the system maximum operating pressure (MOP). This is the third edition (2023) and is part of the ISO 16486 series.
Key topics and requirements
- Material specification: general properties and classification of PA‑U compounds, including additives, colour, identification, virgin and reprocessable material considerations.
- Test parameters: parameters for referenced test methods (e.g., tensile, impact, density, long‑term hydrostatic strength) used to verify compound and component performance.
- Jointing methods: applicability to components joined by fusion jointing and/or mechanical jointing.
- Design and pressure rating: calculation and design scheme to determine Maximum Operating Pressure (MOP) for buried PA‑U piping systems.
- Durability issues: provisions addressing chemical resistance, effects of transported liquid hydrocarbons and hydrogen, and gas permeation characteristics.
- Annexes: (normative and informative) cover chemical resistance, hoop stress at burst, exposure to liquid hydrocarbons, and permeation of different gases - useful for performance assessment and safety evaluation.
Applications and users
Who uses ISO 16486-1:
- Gas network designers and engineers - for selection, design and pressure-rating of PA‑U pipework.
- Manufacturers of PA‑U pipes, fittings and valves - to qualify compounds and production processes.
- Contractors and fusion operators - to ensure components meet material and jointing requirements (see related parts on fusion parameters and operator training).
- Regulators and safety assessors - for conformity assessment, risk analysis and approval of buried gas distribution systems.
Practical applications include distribution mains and service lines for natural gas, biogas networks, and emerging low‑emission fuels such as hydrogen where material permeation and chemical compatibility are critical.
Related standards
ISO 16486‑1 is part of the ISO 16486 series; related documents include other parts covering materials, components, fitness‑for‑purpose, fusion parameters, installation practice, conformity assessment and operator training. Normative references used in the standard include ISO 1167, ISO 9080, ISO 12162 and ISO 18553, among others - important for test methods, long‑term strength and pigment dispersion assessment.
