ISO 17263;2012 establishes an AEI system based on radio frequency technologies. This system is intended for general application in RTTT/TICS. It allows the transfer of the identification codes and further information about equipment and vehicles used in intermodal transport into such RTTT/TICS and information systems related to intermodal transport processes. Within the intermodal context of the RTTT/TICS Sector, AEI systems have the specific objective of achieving an unambiguous identification of an ITU or related equipment or vehicle or item used in intermodal transport, and to make that identification automatically. Vehicles will be considered and handled under Intermodal aspects as "Intermodal Equipment". Therefore, a differentiation between AEI and AVI systems for the purpose of this standard is not required.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 17263:2012 - Intelligent transport systems - Automatic vehicle and equipment identification - System parameters is an international standard that defines system parameters for Automatic Equipment Identification (AEI) using radio frequency technologies. AEI is essential for the efficiency and reliability of intermodal transport, supporting processes in Road Transport and Traffic Telematics (RTTT) and Transport Information and Control Systems (TICS). The standard provides a universal framework enabling unambiguous and automated identification of vehicles, equipment, and items throughout the intermodal transport chain.
By establishing common parameters and performance criteria, ISO 17263:2012 ensures global interoperability among AEI systems, facilitating seamless information exchange and process automation for transport operators, logistics providers, and related information systems.
Key Topics
- AEI System Architecture: ISO 17263:2012 describes a system architecture based on Dedicated Short-Range Communication (DSRC) links, supporting both independent AEI deployments and integration within larger RTTT/TICS applications.
- System Parameters and Performance: The standard defines operational parameters for AEI readers and tags, performance requirements, and environmental considerations for reliable identification under varied conditions.
- Identification and Data Exchange: AEI systems must consistently transfer unique identification codes and relevant data of transport units (e.g., containers, vehicles, load units) to support tracking, management, and control across intermodal operations.
- Data Capture System Categories:
- Fixed point systems (e.g., terminal access control)
- Lane systems (e.g., highway, rail identification)
- Yard control (movable reader equipment)
- Portable systems (handheld readers)
- Reliability and Security: The standard sets benchmarks for system reliability and error rates, emphasizing the importance of accurate and secure data capture for logistics and transport operations.
Applications
Implementing ISO 17263:2012 brings practical benefits and efficiencies to various sectors:
- Intermodal Logistics: Enables tracking and automatic identification of containers, swap bodies, trailers, and vehicles as they move across transport modes (road, rail, marine), streamlining inventory control and event recording at key transfer points.
- Yard and Terminal Management: Supports real-time data collection for entry/exit control, automated check-in/out, allocation of units, and fleet management within ports, terminals, and logistics centers.
- Supply Chain Automation: Allows integration with transport information systems for automated observation, planning, and documentation of movements, reducing manual errors and administrative overhead.
- Security and Access Control: Facilitates secure identification of vehicles and equipment at border crossings, secure facilities, and loading/unloading zones.
Related Standards
ISO 17263:2012 is designed for compatibility and interoperability with a range of related international standards, ensuring that AEI implementations meet consistent technical and operational criteria. Key related standards include:
