This document specifies a method, using glacial acetic acid, to determine the mass percentage of acetate, after removal of non-fibrous matter, in textiles made of mixtures of — acetate with — certain chlorofibres or after-chlorinated chlorofibres. It is also possible to analyse mixtures containing acetate by using the test methods described in ISO 1833-3 or ISO 1833-9.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 1833-14:2019 is an international standard established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies a quantitative chemical analysis method for textiles, particularly focusing on mixtures of acetate fibers with certain other fibers. This method employs glacial acetic acid to determine the mass percentage of acetate fibers in blended textiles after eliminating non-fibrous material. It provides a reliable, repeatable approach for evaluating textile fiber composition, which is critical for quality control, regulatory compliance, and research in the textile industry.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application
This standard applies to textiles composed of mixtures of acetate fibers combined with certain chlorofibres or after-chlorinated chlorofibres. It is also compatible with other analysis methods described in ISO 1833-3 and ISO 1833-9 to handle various acetate-containing blends. -
Principle of the Method
Acetate fibers are dissolved using glacial acetic acid from a known dry mass of the textile blend. The remaining insoluble residue is collected, washed, dried, and weighed. The acetate content is calculated by subtracting the residue percentage from the total sample mass. -
Reagents and Equipment
- Glacial acetic acid with a boiling point between 116 °C and 119 °C is used as the main solvent.
- Standard apparatus such as conical flasks, filtration crucibles, and mechanical agitation devices facilitate the test procedure.
-
Test Procedure
The test involves treating the textile sample multiple times with fresh glacial acetic acid, filtering, rinsing, drying, and weighing the residue. This ensures precise separation and quantification. -
Accuracy and Reliability
The method offers a confidence interval within ±1% mass fraction at a 95% confidence level, ensuring high fidelity in quantitative fiber analysis.
Applications
-
Textile Quality Control
Manufacturers and laboratories can use ISO 1833-14:2019 to verify the fiber composition in acetate blends, ensuring product specifications are met. -
Regulatory Compliance
Helps to confirm textile content information for labeling and compliance with legal and trade regulations. -
Research and Development
Enables textile researchers to accurately analyze fiber mixtures in new fabric developments or hybrid textile applications. -
Material Authentication
Assists in detecting fiber fraud or adulteration in commercial textiles.
Related Standards
