This document specifies a method, using benzyl alcohol, to determine the mass percentage of acetate, after removal of non-fibrous matter, in textiles made of mixtures of — acetate with — triacetate, polypropylene, elastolefin, melamine, polypropylene/polyamide bicomponent and polyacrylate fibres.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 1833-9:2019 specifies a quantitative chemical analysis method for determining the mass percentage of acetate in textile mixtures using benzyl alcohol. It applies after removal of non‑fibrous matter and covers mixtures of acetate with triacetate, polypropylene, elastolefin, melamine, polypropylene/polyamide bicomponent and polyacrylate fibres. This second edition revises the original scope and clarifies precision and calculation details.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Targeted at mixtures containing acetate with specified other fibres (triacetate, polypropylene, elastolefin, melamine, polypropylene/polyamide bicomponent, polyacrylate).
- Principle: Dissolve acetate from a known dry mass of the mixture in benzyl alcohol; collect, wash, dry and weigh the insoluble residue; calculate acetate content by difference.
- Reagents and apparatus:
- Benzyl alcohol and ethanol required.
- Conical flask (≥200 ml), mechanical shaker, and heating apparatus to maintain (52 ± 2) °C (e.g., thermostatted water bath).
- Test procedure (high level):
- Add 100 ml benzyl alcohol per gram of specimen.
- Shake at (52 ± 2) °C for (20 ± 1) min; repeat extraction cycle three times with fresh benzyl alcohol portions.
- Filter, wash with benzyl alcohol, rinse residue with ethanol (three times), dry, cool and weigh.
- Calculation: Follow calculation and expression rules in ISO 1833-1 (general principles). The factor d = 1.00, except for melamine, where d = 1.01.
- Precision: For homogeneous mixtures, confidence limits do not exceed ±1 percentage point at a 95% confidence level.
Applications and users
- Textile testing and quality control laboratories performing material composition verification.
- Manufacturers and suppliers verifying compliance of blended fabrics containing acetate.
- Certification bodies and standards auditors assessing labelling, specifications and claims about fibre content.
- R&D and academic researchers studying blend behavior, processing effects or developing new textile blends.
- Useful for regulatory compliance, product labelling accuracy and forensic textile analysis.
