Overview
ISO 18428:2013 - Space data and information transfer systems - Spacecraft Onboard Interface Services - Subnetwork Device Discovery Service - defines the SOIS-compliant service interface for discovering devices on spacecraft onboard subnetworks. Originally produced as CCSDS 854.0-M-1 and adopted by ISO, the standard specifies what the Subnetwork Device Discovery Service must provide (service primitives, parameters, Management Information Base and a conformance proforma), but does not prescribe link-level protocols or implementation methods. It is intended to be applied together with the SOIS Green Book and supports cross-agency and cross-mission interoperability.
Key Topics
- Service scope and purpose: Defines the functions and interfaces for detecting and reporting the presence of subnetwork devices on spacecraft.
- Service primitives & parameters: Specifies the API-like operations (device discovery primitives) and the parameters that clients and subnetworks exchange (described at the service level).
- Management Information Base (MIB): Provides standardized management objects for configuration, status and discovery-related telemetry.
- Conformance statement proforma: Template to declare SOIS Subnetwork Device Discovery Service conformance for missions or equipment.
- Assumptions, QoS and security considerations: Discusses expected operational context, quality-of-service expectations and security concerns at the service level (protocol-level security is left to link-specific documents).
- Data conventions: Includes CCSDS conventions such as bit-numbering and octet (eight-bit byte) naming used across SOIS documents.
- Standards relationship: Conforms to principles in the Spacecraft Onboard Interface Services Green Book; link-level protocols are to be documented by missions, agencies or CCSDS.
Applications
ISO 18428:2013 is applicable wherever reliable, interoperable device discovery is needed inside spacecraft onboard networks:
- Spacecraft avionics and payload integration - enabling subsystem detection and configuration during power-up and hot-plug events.
- Mission system architects and integrators - for defining interface behavior and ensuring cross-vendor compatibility.
- Onboard software and firmware developers - to implement the Subnetwork Device Discovery Service interface and MIB elements.
- Ground support and test systems - for validating and exercising discovery behaviors in testbeds and simulators.
- Standards bodies and agencies (CCSDS members) - for documenting link-specific protocols that realize the service.
