ISO 18434-1:2008 provides an introduction to the application of infrared thermography (IRT) to machinery condition monitoring and diagnostics, where "machinery" includes machine auxiliaries such as valves, fluid and electrically powered machines, and machinery-related heat exchanger equipment. In addition, IR applications pertaining to machinery performance assessment are addressed. ISO 18434-1:2008: introduces the terminology of IRT as it pertains to condition monitoring and diagnostics of machines; describes the types of IRT procedures and their merits; provides guidance on establishing severity assessment criteria for anomalies identified by IRT; outlines methods and requirements for carrying out IRT of machines, including safety recommendations; provides information on data interpretation, and assessment criteria and reporting requirements; provides procedures for determining and compensating for reflected apparent temperature, emissivity, and attenuating media. ISO 18434-1:2008 also encompasses testing procedures for determining and compensating for reflected apparent temperature, emissivity, and attenuating media when measuring the surface temperature of a target with a quantitative IRT camera.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 18434-1:2008 - "Condition monitoring and diagnostics of machines - Thermography - Part 1: General procedures" provides guidance on using infrared thermography (IRT) for machine condition monitoring and diagnostics. The standard covers machinery and machine auxiliaries (for example valves, fluid- and electrically-powered machines, and heat-exchanger related equipment) and addresses IRT applications for machine performance assessment, anomaly detection and severity evaluation.
Key topics and requirements
- Terminology and scope: Introduces IRT terms as they apply to machine condition monitoring and diagnostics.
- IRT procedure types and merits: Describes different thermography approaches and guidance to select appropriate methods for specific inspection goals.
- Measurement accuracy: Procedures for determining and compensating for reflected apparent temperature, emissivity, and attenuating media when measuring surface temperature with quantitative IRT cameras.
- Data interpretation and assessment criteria: Guidance on interpreting thermal images, establishing severity assessment criteria for identified anomalies, and how to prioritize findings.
- Operational requirements and safety: Outlines practical steps and safety recommendations for conducting thermographic surveys of machinery.
- Reporting: Defines required information and best practices for clear, consistent thermography reporting to support maintenance decisions.
Applications
ISO 18434-1:2008 is practical for organizations and professionals using thermography to detect faults, prevent failures, and optimize maintenance:
- Preventive and predictive maintenance programs - scheduled thermographic surveys to detect developing issues (bearing overheating, electrical hotspots, fluid flow anomalies).
- Diagnostic investigations - root-cause analysis when abnormal thermal patterns are found.
- Performance assessment - assessing heat-exchanger effectiveness, insulation integrity, or thermal balance in machine systems.
- Inspection and compliance reporting - standardized reporting for asset managers, reliability engineers, and maintenance contractors.
Who should use this standard
- Reliability and maintenance engineers
- Condition monitoring specialists and thermographers
- Plant managers and asset owners
- Inspection and testing service providers
- Safety officers and quality assurance teams
Related standards
ISO 18434-1:2008 is the general-procedures part of the thermography guidance for machine condition monitoring. It is intended to be used alongside other industry standards and guidance on condition monitoring, thermographic practice, instrumentation, and personnel competence to form a complete thermography-based inspection program.
