ISO 18756:2003 describes a test method that covers the determination of fracture toughness of monolithic ceramic materials at room temperature by the surface crack in flexure (SCF) method. This International Standard is intended for use with monolithic ceramics and whisker- or particulate-reinforced ceramics that are regarded as macroscopically homogeneous. It does not include continuous-fiber reinforced ceramic composites. The test method is applicable to materials with either flat or rising crack growth resistance curves.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 18756:2003 specifies the surface crack in flexure (SCF) test method for determining the fracture toughness of monolithic and whisker- or particulate-reinforced advanced ceramics at room temperature. The method uses a small, semi‑elliptical surface precrack produced by a Knoop indentation, followed by fracture in four‑point flexure and fractographic measurement of the critical crack size to calculate the SCF fracture toughness value (KIsc). The standard is intended for macroscopically homogeneous ceramics and excludes continuous‑fiber reinforced ceramic composites.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope & applicability: Monolithic ceramics and whisker/particulate‑reinforced ceramics; suitable for materials with flat or rising R‑curve behavior. Note: usually applicable to materials with fracture toughness ≲ ~10 MPa·m^0.5; may be difficult for very hard/soft or porous materials.
- Precrack method: Knoop indentation is used to generate a small surface crack; residual indentation stresses are removed by careful polishing before fracture.
- Test geometry & fixtures: Rectangular beam specimens tested in four‑point flexure (1/3 or 1/4 span configurations) in accordance with ISO 14704.
- Apparatus & measurement:
- Universal test machine meeting ISO 7500‑1 Class 1 accuracy.
- Hardness tester capable of 20–50 N to create indentations.
- Micrometer or equivalent with 0.002 mm resolution.
- Optical or SEM microscopy (typically 100×–500×) and dye penetrants for crack detection.
- Procedure essentials: make indentation, remove residual stresses, fracture in four‑point bending, perform fractography to measure precrack/critical crack, compute KIsc from fracture load and crack geometry.
- Annexes: guidance on environmental effects, precrack characterization, R‑curve estimation, and chamfer correction factors.
Practical applications and users
ISO 18756:2003 is used for:
- Material development and comparison of advanced ceramics.
- Quality assurance and incoming inspection of ceramic parts.
- Generating design and reliability data (fracture toughness inputs for design).
- Failure analysis and research into crack‑growth resistance (R‑curve behavior).
Typical users: materials scientists, ceramics engineers, R&D laboratories, quality control/QA labs, and standards bodies involved in advanced technical ceramics testing.
