ISO 1927-4:2012 describes methods for the determination and measurement of the consistency of dense and insulating castables as defined in ISO 1927-1:2012. It is applicable to all types of dense regular castables, dense deflocculated castables and insulating castables to determine the liquid addition necessary for preparing test pieces according to ISO 1927-5:2012.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 1927-4:2012 - Monolithic (unshaped) refractory products - Part 4: Determination of consistency of castables - specifies laboratory methods to measure the consistency of dense and insulating castables. The standard applies to dense regular castables, dense deflocculated castables and insulating (lightweight) castables and defines how much liquid (water) must be added to achieve the correct workability for preparing test pieces per ISO 1927-5:2012.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose: Establish reproducible test procedures to determine water addition required to reach specified consistency and working time for castables.
- Three main test methods:
- Rodding/tamping (for insulating castables with lightweight aggregates) using manual or low-intensity mixing.
- Tap‑flow table method (for general castables) - use of a tap‑flow table to produce a slump (S) measured as the average of two perpendicular diameters.
- Cone vibration method (for dense vibrating castables) - use of a vibrating table and tapered cone moulds to calculate a flow value (F) as the percentage increase relative to the mould base diameter (100 mm).
- Self‑flowing castable test - measuring spread under its own weight after removal of an 80 mm cone.
- Apparatus and dimensions: stainless steel truncated-cone moulds (100 mm base, 70 mm top; heights 50 mm and 80 mm), tap‑flow table (8 mm cam lift), vibrating table (preset amplitude 0.50 mm), balances (±50 g and ±1 g), callipers, thermometer, stopwatch and suitable mixers.
- Controlled test conditions:
- Wet mixing time: typically 2–8 min (deflocculated mixes often need longer).
- Mixer pan loading: 50–75% of dry batch volume.
- Temperature: water, castable and ambient between 18 °C and 22 °C.
- Water quality: potable mains water recommended.
- Outputs and reporting:
- Report slump S (mm) or flow value F (%).
- Report water addition as litres per 100 kg dry castable (l/100 kg).
- Record mixing times and elapsed time from water addition (useful for working time determination).
Applications and users
ISO 1927-4:2012 is used by:
- Refractory manufacturers for quality control and formulation adjustment.
- Laboratories and test houses performing standardized physical testing of monolithic refractories.
- R&D teams developing new castable mixes (dense, deflocculated, insulating).
- Specifiers and project engineers verifying workability and on‑site consistency requirements. Practical uses include setting production water addition, comparing batches, measuring working time, and ensuring reproducible preparation of test specimens per ISO 1927‑series requirements.
