Abstract
Overview
ISO 1998-7:1998 - Petroleum industry - Terminology - Part 7: Miscellaneous terms - is the 1998 first-edition part of the ISO 1998 series that provides bilingual (English/French) definitions for miscellaneous terms used across the petroleum industry. This part complements Parts 1–6 by covering terms that are not clearly attributable to the main topical categories (raw materials, properties/tests, exploration/production, refining, transport/storage/distribution, measurement). The series was recast in 1998 with a new classification and many new terms.
Key topics
- Bilingual term list: equivalent English and French terms with corresponding definitions to reduce ambiguity in international use.
- Scope focus: terms relating to crude oils and petroleum products across operations from production field to final user; equipment terminology is excluded (see ISO/TC 67).
- Classification and numbering: terms use a structured x.yy.zzz numbering scheme (x = part number; yy = subcategory; zzz = serial number). Part 7 subcategories include:
- 00 - automobile-related terms (driveability, self-ignition, knock, vapour lock)
- 10 - lubricants and lubrication regimes (boundary, hydrodynamic, mixed, elastohydrodynamic)
- 90 - miscellaneous terms (units such as barrel, throughput measures)
- 95 - new terms (temporary placement)
- 99 - acronyms
- Examples of entries: clear definitions for terms such as driveability, pre-ignition, mixed lubrication, barrel (42 US gallons / 159 liters), barrel per calendar/stream day.
Practical applications
ISO 1998-7 is useful for:
- Technical authors and translators creating multilingual manuals, specifications, safety data sheets and operator guidance.
- Engineers and product specialists who need consistent definitions for lubrication regimes, engine phenomena and fuel measurement units.
- Procurement, QA and regulatory teams drafting contracts, compliance documents and test specifications where uniform terminology reduces disputes.
- Standards committees and training providers as a reference for standardized vocabulary during curriculum development and international collaboration.
- Multinational oil companies and service providers to harmonize documentation across languages and jurisdictions.
Benefits
- Reduces ambiguity in international communication about petroleum products and processes.
- Improves interoperability of specifications, contracts and technical documentation.
- Supports translation accuracy with paired English/French definitions.
