This document specifies the laboratory test procedure to determine: a) the maximum longitudinal force that can be applied to a rail, secured to a sleeper, bearer or element of ballastless track by a rail fastening assembly, without non-elastic displacement of the rail occurring, or the longitudinal stiffness at a specified longitudinal displacement of a specimen of embedded rail with an adhesive fastening system, and for any type of fastening; b) the shear displacement and slip data required for track-bridge interaction calculations.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 22074-2:2021 is an international standard developed by ISO for the railway industry, specifically addressing rail fastening systems. This part of the ISO 22074 series specifies the laboratory test method for determining the longitudinal restraint of rails. The procedures outlined help assess how rail fastening assemblies-whether installed on sleepers, bearers, or elements of ballastless track-resist longitudinal forces, ensuring track stability and safety. Additionally, the standard details methods to obtain essential data for track-bridge interaction calculations, which are crucial for the design and maintenance of railway infrastructure.
Key Topics
- Longitudinal Rail Restraint: Defines the procedure to determine the maximum longitudinal force a fastening system can withstand without causing permanent (non-elastic) displacement of the rail.
- Longitudinal Stiffness: Specifies how to measure longitudinal stiffness at a given displacement, especially for embedded rails using adhesive fastening systems.
- Shear Displacement and Slip Data: Outlines the process to gather slip characteristics, which are vital for calculating how rails and supporting structures interact under load-particularly important for track-bridge interactions.
- Laboratory Testing Procedures: Provides a standardized approach including sample preparation, environmental conditioning (e.g., controlled temperature), and the use of calibrated instrumentation.
- Test Reporting: Details the information to be included in a comprehensive test report to facilitate transparency and reproducibility.
Applications
ISO 22074-2:2021 is essential across the railway sector for:
- Railway Infrastructure Design: Ensures rail fastening systems are appropriately specified to manage longitudinal forces encountered during service, minimizing risks such as rail movement or track buckling.
- Product Development and Quality Control: Enables manufacturers to rigorously test rail fastening assemblies, validating their compliance with international requirements for performance and safety.
- Track-Bridge Interaction Analysis: Provides necessary data for engineers to predict how rail and bridge structures will behave together, which is critical for maintaining the structural integrity of bridges under dynamic rail traffic loads.
- Maintenance and Safety Assessment: Supports railway operators in evaluating aged or upgraded track systems, potentially identifying components at risk of failure due to inadequate longitudinal restraint.
- Regulatory Compliance: Assists stakeholders in meeting national and international technical standards, facilitating easier approvals and interoperability in cross-border rail services.

Practical Value
Adopting ISO 22074-2:2021 enables railway infrastructure owners, engineers, and suppliers to:
- Achieve higher safety and reliability in rail networks by preventing track misalignment caused by inadequate fastening systems.
- Support efficient lifecycle management of rail assets by establishing standardized testing and reporting practices.
- Facilitate interoperability and harmonization in international rail operations through alignment with widely recognized ISO railway standards.
By adhering to ISO 22074-2:2021, stakeholders contribute to the safe and efficient operation of modern railway systems worldwide, supporting robust infrastructure development and sustainable transportation networks.
