ISO 2219:2010 specifies the requirements for factory-made products of expanded cork, which are used for the thermal insulation of buildings. The products are made with granulated cork agglomerated without additional binders and are delivered as boards without facings. ISO 2219:2010 describes product characteristics and includes procedures for testing, evaluation of conformity, marking, labelling and packaging. Products covered in ISO 2219:2010 are also used in prefabricated thermal insulation systems and composite panels; the performance of systems incorporating these products is not covered. ISO 2219:2010 does not specify the required level of a given property to be achieved by a product to demonstrate fitness for purpose in a particular application. The levels required for a given application are to be found in regulations or non-conflicting standards. Products with a declared thermal resistance lower than 0,25 m2×K/W, at 10 °C, or a declared thermal conductivity greater than 0,060 W/(m×K), at 10 °C, are not covered in ISO 2219:2010.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 2219:2010 - "Thermal insulation products for buildings - Factory-made products of expanded cork (ICB) - Specification" - defines requirements for factory-made expanded cork boards used as thermal insulation in buildings. It applies to boards made from granulated cork agglomerated with their natural binder, delivered without facings. The standard sets out product characteristics, testing procedures, evaluation of conformity, marking, labelling and packaging. It does not cover the performance of complete systems that incorporate these boards, nor does it set application-specific performance levels (those are determined by regulations or other standards).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Material and product scope: Expanded cork boards (ICB) produced from granulated cork agglomerated without additional binders; delivered as boards without facings.
- Thermal properties: Declared thermal resistance and thermal conductivity are determined at a reference mean temperature of 10 °C. Declared values must represent at least 90 % of production with 90 % confidence (the 90/90 principle). Thermal conductivity is rounded up to the nearest 0.001 W/(m·K); thermal resistance rounded down to the nearest 0.05 m2·K/W when calculated from nominal thickness. Products with declared thermal resistance below 0.25 m2·K/W or declared thermal conductivity above 0.060 W/(m·K) are excluded.
- Testing and conformity: Specifies sampling, conditioning and test methods (referencing ISO 8301 / ISO 8302 for heat-flow measurements) and factory production control procedures.
- Other properties covered: Dimensional tolerances, apparent density, deformation under load, compressive creep, water absorption, tensile/shear strength, acoustic properties and reaction-to-fire testing where applicable.
- Marking, labelling and packaging: Requirements for product identification and delivery.
Practical applications
ISO 2219 is intended for manufacturers, testing laboratories, specifiers and compliance officers involved in:
- Specifying and manufacturing expanded cork insulation boards for walls, roofs, floors and other building applications.
- Supplying boards for prefabricated thermal insulation systems and composite panels (note: system performance is outside ISO 2219’s scope).
- Preparing technical data sheets and declaring thermal performance for building regulations and procurement.
Who uses this standard
- Cork board manufacturers (product specification, production control)
- Test laboratories (thermal and mechanical testing per referenced ISO methods)
- Architects, engineers and contractors (material selection and compliance)
- Regulatory authorities and certification bodies (conformity assessment)
Related standards (select)
- ISO 8301 / ISO 8302 (thermal conductivity testing)
