ISO 22452:2011 specifies test methods for determining the structural properties of double-sided, wood-based, load-bearing structural insulated panels (SIPs) for use in walls. It is applicable to SIPs having two face layers, at least one of which is a wood-based structural panel, and a core made of a thermally insulating material with sufficient shear strength to cause the face layers to act together structurally.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 22452:2011 for Structural Insulated Panel (SIP) Walls
ISO 22452:2011 specifies standardized test methods for double-sided, wood-based load-bearing structural insulated panels (SIPs) used in wall applications. The standard covers test procedures to determine the structural properties of SIPs made from two face layers (at least one wood-based) bonded to a rigid thermally insulating core with sufficient shear strength for the faces to act together structurally. It is intended to provide repeatable laboratory methods for evaluating tensile bonding, shear, vertical load performance, in-plane racking and out-of-plane bending, and includes accelerated ageing and a creep test (informative annex).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and definitions: Clarifies SIP types (e.g., slabstock, double-skin box) and required core/face configurations.
- Conditioning: Standard conditioning at (20 ± 2) °C and (65 ± 5) % RH to constant mass (stabilized within ±0.5 % for 48 h) - alternative conditionings must be reported.
- Tensile test (core and face bond): Specimen sizing and sampling specified (e.g., 150 mm × 150 mm cross-section) to identify failure modes in core or glue line; elevated temperature conditioning (80 °C for 4 h) when appropriate.
- Shear test (panel assembly): Short-term shear test on specimens (typical span 1 000 mm × 150 mm) with test setup to induce shear failure and procedure for reducing span if necessary.
- Vertical load and bending tests: Methods to quantify stiffness and strength under vertical loads, bending for SIP headers and out-of-plane performance.
- In-plane racking: Monotonic racking stiffness and strength tests for wall performance under horizontal loads.
- Accelerated ageing and creep: Procedures include dry soak and modified D1183 C cycles in accordance with ASTM D7446-09; creep testing referenced via ASTM C480 (informative).
- Reporting requirements: Detailed reporting of sampling, specimen dimensions, conditioning, failure modes, and test results.
Applications and who uses ISO 22452:2011
- SIP manufacturers validating structural panel designs and materials.
- Independent testing laboratories performing standardized structural tests.
- Structural engineers and building designers assessing SIP wall performance (stiffness, strength, durability).
- Product specifiers, certification bodies and regulators needing repeatable test evidence (note: ISO 22452 is not intended for routine quality control or conformity assessment).
- R&D teams developing new SIP face/core combinations and adhesive systems.
