This document specifies a method for determining the deposition behaviour of an electro-deposition coating (e-coat) on various substrates and with various pre-treatments. It applies to electro-deposition coatings for automotive industries and other general industrial applications, e.g. chiller units, consumer products, radiators, aerospace, agriculture.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 22553-14:2021 - Paints and varnishes - Electro-deposition coatings - Part 14: Deposition behaviour specifies a laboratory method to determine the deposition behaviour of electro‑deposition coatings (e-coats) on different substrates and after various pre-treatments. The standard is intended for automotive and general industrial applications (e.g., chillers, consumer products, radiators, aerospace, agriculture) and defines how to run controlled e-coating trials and record resulting film thickness and surface quality.
Key topics and requirements
- Principle: Immerse a test panel and a counter‑electrode in a laboratory deposition tank and coat at specified voltages, bath temperatures and times; measure dry film thickness for each condition.
- Apparatus: laboratory deposition tank with circulation, DC power supply, agitator or pump, oven for curing. Measurement devices include a dry film thickness gauge (max error 0.3 µm), thermometer (±0.1 °C) and stopwatch.
- Test panels: conductive panels prepared per ISO 1514, ~190 × 105 × 0.75 mm, with defined pre‑treatment.
- Operating parameters: set bath temperature (typically 25–35 °C), control to ±0.5 °C for deposition; select voltage/time to reach nominal dry film thickness; rinse with demineralized water per ISO 23321 and cure at object‑appropriate temperatures (commonly 100–180 °C).
- Measurement and evaluation: measure dry film thickness at five points per zone (per ISO 2808) and record mean values for combinations of voltage and bath temperature. Visually inspect for surface defects (e.g., pitting).
- Reporting: report identification of coating, reference to ISO 22553-14:2021, bath voltage/temperature, deposition times (ramp and hold), curing temperature/time, measured thickness results, deviations, anomalies and test date.
- Reproducibility: the standard notes that precision (fidelity) data are not currently available.
Practical applications
- Use ISO 22553-14 to:
- Characterize how an e-coat deposits under varying voltages and temperatures.
- Compare coatings, substrates or pre-treatment processes during R&D.
- Set production targets for bath voltage and cure conditions to achieve required film thickness.
- Support quality control and failure investigation by documenting deposition behaviour and surface defects.
Who should use this standard
- Coating formulators and R&D laboratories
- Automotive OEMs and tier suppliers
- Industrial e-coating operations and process engineers
- Independent testing laboratories and quality assurance teams
