This document specifies an additional test for verifying the stability of a laden truck fitted with a powered load-handling device, such as a sideshift, which can displace the centre of gravity laterally to a substantial, predetermined extent from the longitudinal centre plane of the truck or from the centred position. Such devices are used in this mode for depositing and retrieving a load. A displacement is considered to be a substantial displacement if it is more than: — 100 mm, for a truck with a rated capacity — 150 mm, for a truck with a rated capacity ≥ 5 000 kg and ≤ 10 000 kg; — 250 mm, for a truck with a rated capacity > 10 000 kg and — 350 mm, for a truck with a rated capacity ≥ 20 000 kg; This document is applicable to the following types of trucks as defined in ISO 5053-1: a) counterbalance trucks; b) reach and straddle trucks; c) pallet stackers; d) bidirectional and multidirectional trucks; e) industrial variable-reach trucks; f) rough-terrain trucks with mast; g) rough-terrain variable reach trucks; h) counterbalance trucks with articulated steering; i) variable-reach container handler; j) counterbalanced container handler.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 22915-10:2023 - Industrial trucks - Verification of stability - Part 10 specifies an additional stability test for laden industrial trucks fitted with powered load‑handling devices (for example, sideshifts) that can displace the centre of gravity laterally during stacking operations. The standard defines when a lateral displacement is considered substantial, the test conditions and load positioning for different truck types, and marking requirements for operator information.
Keywords: ISO 22915-10:2023, industrial trucks, verification of stability, sideshift, lateral displacement, stacking.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Applies to a broad range of truck types (as defined in ISO 5053-1): counterbalance, reach/straddle, pallet stackers, bidirectional/multidirectional, variable‑reach and container handlers, rough‑terrain trucks, and articulated counterbalance trucks.
- Definition of substantial lateral displacement
- Thresholds for displacement S (from longitudinal centre plane or centred position):
-
100 mm for rated capacity < 5 000 kg
-
150 mm for rated capacity ≥ 5 000 kg and ≤ 10 000 kg
-
250 mm for rated capacity > 10 000 kg and < 20 000 kg
-
350 mm for rated capacity ≥ 20 000 kg
-
- Thresholds for displacement S (from longitudinal centre plane or centred position):
- Test conditions
- Load is displaced laterally by the powered device in the direction of least stability to the fullest extent allowed by the mechanism.
- Truck positioning on the tilt table follows the relevant part of the ISO 22915 series for each truck type (see Clause 4 cross‑references).
- Verification of stability
- Stability is verified per the specific test referenced for each truck type (e.g., test 3 of ISO 22915‑2 for counterbalance trucks). ISO 22915‑1 provides general test principles.
- Marking
- The determined capacity under this special operating condition and the lateral substantial displacement must be shown on an information plate visible to the operator, in accordance with ISO 3691‑1.
Applications and users
- Who uses it
- Truck manufacturers and OEMs designing sideshifts and powered lateral devices.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies performing stability verification.
- Fleet managers, safety engineers, and purchasing professionals specifying equipment for stacking operations with lateral load movement.
- Practical value
- Ensures safe operation when stacking or retrieving loads with powered lateral shift.
- Provides consistent test criteria to assess rollover risk and allowable capacities under off‑centre loading.
- Supports compliance, labeling, and operator awareness to reduce accidents in warehouses, ports, and heavy industrial settings.
