This document defines track geometry parameters and specifies the minimum requirements for track geometry measurements and the evaluation method for track geometry quality. This document is applicable to 1 435 mm and wider track gauges. The urban/light rail systems, tramways and any track gauge narrower than 1 435 mm are excluded from the scope of this document, however it can be used as a reference.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 23054-1:2022 - "Railway applications - Track geometry quality - Part 1: Characterization of track geometry and track geometry quality" defines how to describe, measure and evaluate the geometric condition of railway track. The standard applies to track gauges of 1 435 mm and wider (standard and broad gauges); urban/light rail, tramways and gauges narrower than 1 435 mm are excluded but may use the document as a reference. It establishes parameter definitions, a track coordinate system, minimum measurement requirements and methods to assess track geometry quality.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Track geometry parameters: formal definitions for track gauge, alignment, longitudinal level, cross level, twist, and other related parameters used to quantify track condition.
- Track coordinate system: moving right-handed Cartesian axes (X along the track, Y parallel to running surface, Z perpendicular and downwards) for consistent measurement reporting.
- Measurement systems: requirements for common measurement technologies, including chord measurement systems (versine/chord offsets) and inertial measurement systems (accelerometers/gyroscopes), and guidance on converting between domains (colouring/decolouring/recolouring).
- Measurement characteristics: specifications for wavelength ranges, chord lengths, sampling distance, resolution, range of measurement and uncertainty to ensure reliable data capture.
- Filtering and processing: filter requirements (Annex C normative) and informative guidance on filtering, decolouring and decoupling processes (Annexes D, E).
- Assessment methods: procedures to evaluate geometry quality including peak-value detection of isolated defects, standard deviation, power spectral density (PSD) analysis and a Track Quality Index (TQI) combining multiple irregularities.
- Output and reporting: minimum output requirements and recommended parameters to support maintenance, safety assessment and data exchange.
Practical applications and typical users
ISO 23054-1 is intended for professionals who need consistent, repeatable track geometry data for safety, performance and maintenance:
- Infrastructure managers - establish acceptance criteria and long-term condition monitoring.
- Track engineers and maintenance planners - prioritize repairs, plan tamping and grinding, estimate life-cycle costs.
- Measurement equipment manufacturers and data analysts - design systems that meet required resolution, sampling and filtering criteria.
- Contractors and testing laboratories - perform commissioning tests, acceptance measurements and compliance reporting.
- Regulators and auditors - evaluate conformity with national safety regimes.
