Applies to reamers, screwing taps, etc. It comprise two series of dimensions. The complete range of diameters is divided into a certain number of diameter steps. In the metric tables, the values of the across flats of the squares and the preferred diameters are scaled in accordance with the R20 series of preferred numbers. In the inch tables, these values are exact conversions of the corresponding metric values.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 237:1975 Rotating tools with parallel shanks - Diameters of shanks and sizes of driving squares is an essential international standard published by ISO. This standard specifies the diameters of shanks and the corresponding sizes of driving squares for rotating tools such as reamers and screwing taps that feature parallel shanks. Covering both metric and inch-based measurements, ISO 237:1975 ensures global compatibility and interchangeability of precision rotary tools, promoting consistency for manufacturers, tool designers, and end-users worldwide.
Key Topics
- Shank Diameter Standardization: Establishes specific diameter values for rotating tool shanks, divided into well-defined steps to suit various industrial applications.
- Driving Square Dimensions: Details the sizes of driving squares that mate with standardized shank diameters, ensuring effective torque transmission and safe usage.
- Metric and Inch Tables: Provides two parallel sets of measurements:
- Metric series: Preferred diameters and across-flat values follow the R20 and R40 series of preferred numbers.
- Inch series: Exact conversions of the metric values, ensuring uniformity.
- Principal and Secondary Series:
- Principal series: Recommended for general use, providing optimal ratios between shank diameters and driving square sizes.
- Secondary series: Offers finer subdivisions, mainly for small shank diameters where higher precision is necessary, but use is to be avoided wherever possible.
- Interchangeability: Metric and inch values are aligned so that corresponding diameters and squares are globally interchangeable, simplifying international tool supply and distribution.
Applications
ISO 237:1975 is widely used in the metalworking, machining, and manufacturing sectors where rotary tools with parallel shanks are common. Key applications include:
- Production of Cutting Tools: Standardizing shank diameters and driving squares aids tool makers in producing globally compatible reamers, taps, and other rotating tools.
- Tool Holding and Machine Design: Equipment manufacturers can design tool holders and driving devices that match ISO-conforming dimensions, increasing compatibility and reducing custom solutions.
- Quality Assurance: By referencing ISO 237:1975, companies ensure compliance with international quality requirements, reducing product variation and supporting reliable tool performance.
- Maintenance and Replacement: Ensures that replacement parts and tools from different suppliers will fit and function correctly, minimizing downtime.
These practical applications underscore the value of ISO 237:1975 in ensuring uniformity, enhancing tool performance, and streamlining the manufacturing supply chain.
Related Standards
ISO 237:1975 connects with several other standards and recommendations in the field of tool and machine design, including:
- ISO R237-1961: Predecessor to ISO 237:1975, which this standard supersedes.
- ISO Preferred Number Series (R20 & R40): Used in scaling the dimension tables, ensuring harmonization across industrial standards.
- ISO/TC 29 Standards: Covering a range of rotary tool and tool holder dimensions and specifications.
- Relevant National Standards: ISO 237:1975 forms the basis for harmonizing national standards for rotating tool shanks and driving squares.
Implementing ISO 237:1975 helps ensure global interoperability and simplifies international trade in tooling and machining equipment through consistent, vetted dimensional requirements. For manufacturers, distributors, and users of rotary tools, adherence to this standard delivers practical benefits in production efficiency, tool safety, and supply chain reliability.
