ISO 24345:2006 describes a method for determining the resistance against separation of two layers of a resilient floor covering by peeling.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 24345:2006 specifies a laboratory method to determine the peel resistance of resilient floor coverings - the force required to separate two adjacent layers by peeling. The standard provides a repeatable procedure for sampling, conditioning, test setup, measurement and reporting, supporting manufacturers, test laboratories and quality assurance teams that need reliable data on layer adhesion and product integrity.
Key Topics
- Scope: Method for measuring resistance to separation (peel) between two layers of a resilient floor covering.
- Terminology: Defines resistance au pelage (peel resistance) as the force applied across the specimen width to separate adjacent layers.
- Apparatus: A tensile testing machine with appropriate gripping and a recording device capable of maintaining the required test speed and recording force.
- Specimen sampling:
- Take a representative sample of the material.
- Cut six specimens, minimum length 150 mm and width (50 ± 1) mm.
- Three specimens cut in the length direction and three in the width direction, taken at regular intervals with at least 100 mm from outer sample edge.
- Conditioning: Specimens conditioned at (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % relative humidity for at least 24 hours; maintain conditions during testing.
- Test procedure:
- Initiate separation sufficiently to grip the two layers.
- Mount specimen with grips about 50 mm apart so tension is applied across the full width.
- Test separation speed: (100 ± 5) mm/min and record the separation force after initial separation.
- Calculations:
- Exclude the first and last quarter of the recorded trace for each specimen.
- Use a grid to read force values at intersections with the curve; compute the average peel resistance for each specimen and direction, rounded to 5 N.
- Express results in newtons per 50 mm.
- Reporting: Test report must state conformity with ISO 24345:2006, dates, full product identification, sample history, any deviations, averaged and minimum values for each direction, and type of failure if peeling was abnormal.
- Reproducibility: An interlaboratory study is referenced to establish method fidelity.
Applications
- Quality control of multilayer resilient floor coverings to verify adhesive performance and manufacturing consistency.
- Product specification and acceptance testing for manufacturers, flooring suppliers and independent test labs.
- Failure analysis when delamination or poor adhesion is suspected in installed or sample products.
