ISO 2815:2003 describes a method for carrying out an indentation test on a single coating or multicoat system of paint, varnish or related product, using a Buchholz indentor. The length of the indentation produced is indicative of the residual deformation of the coating. This indentation test is not suitable for products which contain a strong plasticizer.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 2815:2003 - "Paints and varnishes - Buchholz indentation test" defines a standardized method to assess the residual deformation of a single coating or multicoat system using the Buchholz indentor. The test measures the indentation length produced by a sharp-edged rotating wheel under a defined load; the measured length indicates how much the coating deforms under indentation. The method is not suitable for coatings containing a strong plasticizer.
Keywords: ISO 2815, Buchholz indentation test, paints and varnishes, indentation length, coating deformation
Key topics and requirements
- Test principle: A hardened tool-steel, sharp-edged wheel (Buchholz indentor) is applied to the coated panel under a fixed effective load of (500 ± 5) g; the resulting indentation length is measured.
- Apparatus: Indentation instrument with two feet and indentor; microscope ×20 with a graduated eyepiece (readable to 0.1 mm); light source positioned so incidence angle > 60° to create a visible shadow for measurement.
- Timing & measurement: Indentor remains in contact for 30 ± 1 s. Measure the indentation shadow (35 ± 5) s after removal. Record five measurements on different panel areas and report the mean to the nearest 0.1 mm.
- Validity vs. film thickness: Table of correspondence links indentation length (mm) to indentation depth (µm) and minimum coating thickness (µm). Discard results that fall outside these limits.
- Conversion to indentation resistance: Annex A provides a conversion (commonly used relationship α ≈ 100 / l) and discusses conversion error margins.
- Precision: Repeatability r = 0.23 mm (same operator, same lab); reproducibility R = 0.45 mm (different laboratories).
- Environmental control: Standard conditioning and test ambient (23 ± 2) °C, 50 ± 5 % RH unless otherwise agreed.
Practical applications and users
- Quality control in paint, varnish and coatings production to monitor film hardness/elastic recovery and batch consistency.
- R&D and formulation teams evaluating deformation resistance of new coatings or additives.
- Specification testing for suppliers and customers verifying coating performance on metal or glass substrates.
- Failure analysis where surface indentation behavior helps diagnose softening, insufficient curing, or substrate/coating incompatibility.
Users: coating formulators, QC laboratories, test houses, OEMs specifying surface performance, and compliance teams.
