This document specifies procedures for detecting the presence of porosity in a protective paint system of any thickness on a steel or other metallic substrate. The procedures given in this document are based on methods using two different types of test equipment, the choice of equipment depending on the dry-film thickness. These procedures are only applicable to the testing of electrically non-conductive parts of a paint system. The test methods specified are mainly intended for use with new coatings, but can also be used for coatings which have been in service for some time. In the latter case, it is important to bear in mind that the coating can have been penetrated by substances in contact with the coating during service.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 29601:2026 defines internationally recognized procedures for detecting porosity in dry films of protective paint systems applied to steel and other metallic substrates. The standard addresses the critical need to assess coating integrity, ensuring optimal corrosion protection for infrastructures and industrial assets. The document outlines methods utilizing both low-voltage pinhole detectors and high-voltage holiday detectors, with equipment selection based on the dry-film thickness. These procedures are suitable for both newly-applied and in-service coatings, as long as testing is limited to electrically non-conductive paint layers. Adhering to this standard helps organizations maintain the effectiveness of protective coatings and supports compliance with best practices in corrosion protection.
Key Topics
- Porosity Detection Methods: The standard details two primary methods for porosity assessment:
- Low-voltage pinhole detection, suitable for coatings up to 500 μm thick.
- High-voltage holiday detection, for thicker coatings, utilizing adjustable output voltages.
- Test Equipment and Calibration:
- Guidance on the selection and verification of pinhole detectors and holiday detectors.
- Requirements for equipment grounding, voltage settings, and verification procedures.
- Test Procedures:
- Step-by-step process for preparing the test surface, selecting the appropriate method, and conducting measurements.
- Advice on the use of wetting agents and surface cleanliness prior to testing.
- Result Reporting:
- Standardized criteria for expressing results, including the number of discontinuities detected.
- Comprehensive guidelines for compiling test reports, ensuring transparency and traceability.
Applications
Implementing ISO 29601:2026 offers practical value across a broad range of industries where corrosion protection and paint system quality are essential:
- Industrial and Civil Structures: Ensuring steel bridges, tanks, pipelines, and marine structures have robust, non-porous coatings.
- Manufacturing and Maintenance: Supporting quality assurance in paint shops and maintenance facilities, both during new applications and periodic inspections of existing assets.
- Infrastructure Longevity: Reducing the risk of corrosion-related failures, thereby extending asset service life and lowering maintenance costs.
- Regulatory and Contractual Compliance: Meeting owner specifications, project requirements, or regulatory obligations for protective coatings on metallic substrates.
- Performance Verification: Providing reliable, repeatable procedures for third-party inspections and warranty validations in the protective coatings industry.
Related Standards
To ensure a comprehensive approach to protective paint system assessment and corrosion protection, the following ISO standards are frequently referenced in conjunction with ISO 29601:2026:
- ISO 12944 Series: Corrosion protection of steel structures by protective paint systems (parts 1-8 cover general considerations, environment classification, surface preparation, protective systems, laboratory testing, and specification development).
- ISO 19840: Measurement and acceptance criteria for dry-film thickness on rough surfaces.
- ISO 16276-1 & ISO 16276-2: Methods for assessing coating adhesion, including pull-off and cross-cut/X-cut tests.
By integrating ISO 29601:2026 procedures with these related standards, stakeholders achieve a robust, consistent framework for protective paint system assessment, ensuring both the durability of protective coatings and the reliable safety of critical infrastructure and assets.
