This part of ISO 3002 defines forces and torques exterted by a tool or by the cutting part on the workpiece, energy and power for particular operations on specific machine tools and details of individual quantities. Contains terms in English, French and Russian as well as the equivalent terms in German, Italian and Dutch.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3002-4:1984 - Basic quantities in cutting and grinding (Part 4: Forces, energy, power) defines a consistent nomenclature and measurement concepts for forces, torques, energy and power in machining and grinding operations. The standard covers how to describe and resolve forces and torques exerted by a tool or by the cutting/grinding part on the workpiece, how to express cutting and feed energies, and how to compute instantaneous power for a specified operation and machine tool. It also provides multilingual terminology (English, French, Russian, plus equivalent German, Italian and Dutch terms).
Key topics
- Definitions of force and torque: total force and total torque produced by cutting parts or by the whole tool; cutting torque about the primary motion axis.
- Geometrical resolution of forces: terminology and symbols for resolving the total force into components relative to tool faces, working planes, machine axes, motion directions (cutting, feed), shear plane and normals.
- Force components: standard names for cutting force, feed force, back force (normal to working plane), thrust force, tool-face tangential and normal forces.
- Shear plane model: shear plane, shear-plane angle and related tangential/perpendicular shear forces for simplified orthogonal cutting analyses.
- Energy concepts: cutting energy (energy to cause primary motion), feed energy (energy for feed motion), and working energy (sum of cutting + feed energies) for a defined operation interval.
- Power definitions: instantaneous power as the scalar product of force and velocity vectors at the cutting-edge principal point; component powers (cutting power, feed power, working power).
- Units and derived quantities: SI guidance - forces (N), torques (N·m), energy (J), power (W); cutting force per unit area, energy per unit volume and cutting power per unit material removal rate are defined with SI examples.
Applications
- Process engineers and machinists use ISO 3002-4 to:
- Standardize measurement and reporting of cutting forces and torques for tool selection and process optimization.
- Calculate cutting and feed power requirements for machine tool sizing and energy-consumption estimates.
- Analyze chip formation and shear-plane mechanics in research and tooling development.
- Interpret force sensor data, design experiments, and compare results across laboratories and suppliers.
- Tool designers, machine-tool manufacturers and test laboratories benefit from the consistent vocabulary and component definitions when specifying instrumentation, control limits and safety margins.
Who should use this standard
- Machining and grinding process engineers
- Tooling and insert manufacturers
- Machine tool designers and integrators
- Tribology and machining researchers
- Test laboratories and standards bodies
Related standards
- ISO 3002-1 (general concepts), ISO 3002-2 (tool geometry conversion formulae), ISO 3002-3 (geometric/kinematic quantities), ISO 3002-5 (grinding terminology), and ISO 841 (machine axis and motion nomenclature). These linked parts should be read together for complete standardization of cutting and grinding quantities.
